"Ah--- I want to go somewhere
The urge to travel far away rises periodically,
and I soothe it with overseas guidebooks and cookbooks.
'Exploring Kitchens of the World' [Misato Okane, Seigensha, Dec. 2020]
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4861528208
is, as the name suggests, a travel essay in which the author explores kitchens around the world.
Among them, there was also a kitchen in Ukraine.
Nameless potato dishes.
The author is treated to nameless home-cooked meals by a family living in the capital, Kyiv.
'What I want to encounter in kitchen exploration is the simple, everyday food that brings smiles in the process.'
At this sentence, I cannot help but think of the current Ukraine,
and I cannot help but worry,
are this family able to have a warm meal right now?
Speaking of Ukraine, it is the home of borscht, but
actually, most daily meals might be dishes without names.
By the way, my lunch today:
Simmered Manganji peppers and thin fried tofu.
New onions and tuna tossed with sesame oil and soy sauce.
Spicy konjac.
Rice and miso soup.
Of these, the only thing I can recognize as having a "name" is
"miso soup"?
Miso soup.
In the online English conversation lessons I take occasionally,
Hello.
When the Filipino teacher asks me what my favorite Japanese food is,
Uh, um...
Tempura.
Sushi.
Tonkatsu.
It tends to be easy-to-understand things like these,
and I don't say "Simmered Manganji peppers and thin fried tofu."
Haha, it's hard to explain,
and it ends up like this -> What is Manganji?
Uh...
As an aside, I am often corrected by my teacher for saying "uh" in Japanese,
and I was taught alternative phrases,
You know...
Like...
Let me see...
But they don't come out right away,
so I end up adding them after "uh"...
Uh, you know.
Returning to the subject,
nameless home-cooked dishes exist all over the world.
Each can be eaten in one's own home.
I just hope for a world where that is the case."
