Lessons Learned from Recovering from a Microsoft 365 Lockout: Redundancy and the Power of People
I have finally recovered from a state where I could not sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
The incident began when I upgraded my device from an iPhone XS Max to an iPhone 17e. Even though I had set my authentication method to 'device-bound,' I assumed that 'everything would be restored via iCloud' and traded in my old iPhone (XS Max). (To be honest, the trade-in value of 14,000 yen was also a factor that swayed me.) To recover, I first contacted Microsoft via their toll-free number. However, it started with an AI response; although I could converse with it, the process always ended with it sending a support URL via SMS.
Since that didn't solve the problem, I called again, but it was difficult to get through to the next step, and sometimes the call would be disconnected. Next, I re-registered for a one-month Microsoft 365 trial and made an inquiry from a different tenant. I finally reached a 'human' representative, and an engineer called me back. However, I was told that 'since this is not the relevant tenant, please contact us again via the AI,' which sent me back to square one.
This was the turning point.
The engineer shared a
conversation prompt (sample) to connect from AI support to a 'human' via email.
When I spoke to the AI using that prompt, I was successfully connected to a 'human' representative, and I was able to receive a formal call from an engineer at a later date. Ultimately, a reset by a Global representative was required, and after multiple identity verification steps, the reset request was executed.
And today, with careful support over the phone, I was able to recover successfully. I felt two things from this experience.
・The importance of redundancy (backup methods)
・The importance of not giving up
And above all, I have nothing but gratitude for the 'human' power of those who assisted me. AI is convenient, but in the end, it was 'people' who helped me. This was an event that made me rethink that balance.
