"Mii-chan and Yamada-san"... Who is Yamada-san, really?

There are various opinions being exchanged regarding the anime adaptation of the manga "Mii-chan and Yamada-san."

"Mii-chan and Yamada-san" is a human drama manga by Nene Azuki.

It depicts the encounter between Yamada-san, a woman working in the nightlife industry, and Mii-chan, a young girl living with precariousness, and portrays modern social issues such as poverty, exploitation, family environment, disability, and isolation through the lives of each individual.

The story begins with the conclusion, "12 months until Mii-chan is killed," already stated, and readers watch the time the two spend heading toward an unavoidable end.

As a work that depicts the harsh reality that "sometimes things cannot be saved" rather than offering easy salvation or poetic justice, it has left a strong impression on many readers, and a TV anime adaptation for 2027 has been decided.

After the anime announcement, while voices were raised questioning whether it was okay to adapt such content due to the gravity of the themes, there were also many voices expressing hope that the charm of the original work would be adapted as is. In response to this reaction, the production committee released a statement saying they would "proceed with production while valuing the intent of the work and receiving advice from experts."

It is a work often discussed on note, and I think one of the reasons is that this work does not present a single answer, but rather leaves it to the reader to think.

This time, I do not intend to analyze the entire work. This is because I feel it is not a work that can be easily concluded.

I believe it is a work where the act of continuing to think itself has meaning.


While the themes the work deals with are receiving a lot of attention, when I re-read the original, I notice not only the social issues but also the personal distance between the two.

There was an announcement that the next chapter of the manga series will finally be the last.
While re-reading it, something suddenly caught my attention.

"What is Yamada-san's real name, anyway?"

The name Yamada-san was originally a pseudonym she used for safety while working at a cabaret club.

However, even after Mii-chan and Yamada-san both quit the shop and started living together, Yamada-san has not revealed her real name.

Of course, considering the situation Mii-chan is in, it could be thought of as a result of prioritizing safety. Even so, as the two become closer, the fact that her real name is not revealed until the end feels like a strange distance.

Even though the two live like a family, they haven't become a complete family. While Yamada-san tries to protect Mii-chan, she hasn't let go of her own past or her real name until the end. That sense of distance might be expressed in the name "Yamada-san."

Furthermore, Yamada-san is aiming to be a manga artist. I am also curious about what meaning it will have that she incorporates depictions based on Mii-chan into her work.

Will her real name be revealed in the final chapter? Or will Yamada-san remain "Yamada-san" until the end?

I cannot provide a simple answer for the work as a whole. That is precisely why I want to watch over the destination of the time the two spend together while holding onto these small questions.

It is a bit too heavy a work to call it enjoyable, though.

Looking at the art style, you wouldn't think it deals with such serious topics...
