Leave the Key-Keeping to the Quail! A Quail Key Pouch from the Picture Book #LooseCuteBirdAndBeastDrawings ③

Every time you take your keys in and out, you'll be immersed in the charm of these loose, laid-back quail...!

We've taken the quail drawn by the artist Keisai Kuwagata—rumored to have been as popular as Hokusai during the Edo period—and turned them into plump, semi-three-dimensional figures while keeping the strength and weakness of the original brushstrokes! Serving as clever key-keepers,
the Quail Key Pouch.

Hello everyone! I'm Sasanoha, a planner for the Felissimo "Museum Club" who loves history.

Do you know of a person named Keisai Kuwagata who was active during the Edo period?

Keisai Kuwagata (1764–1824)
An ukiyo-e artist who was active in the mid-Edo period. While working in his hometown of Edo, he went by the name Kitao Masayoshi with the permission of his master, Kitao Shigemasa. However, at the age of 31 (by traditional Japanese counting), he began using the name Keisai Tsuguzane Kuwagata when he was hired as a retainer artist for the Tsuyama Domain (part of present-day Okayama Prefecture). Keisai Kuwagata's works were very popular with the people of the time, and it is said that he shared the spotlight with Katsushika Hokusai, who was active during the same period. His picture book "Choju Ryakugashiki" (A Guide to Drawing So-Called Cute Animals), which features many animals drawn loosely with simple lines and deformed expressions, is particularly famous.

You can find more details about "Choju Ryakugashiki" in the note below ^^

Among the animals that appear in the "Choju Ryakugashiki" drawn by Keisai, the ones I especially want to recommend—part 2—are these little quail!
They are drawn so effortlessly, capturing every little gesture and expression, that you can almost hear their lively chirping right now!

And there is only one thing a planner thinks when they see quail designed so cutely.

I want to summon these overly cute Keisai quail into the real world...!

So, following my desires, I created a Quail Key Pouch that perfectly reproduces the adorableness of the quail drawn by Keisai, from their round bodies and striped patterns to their little pointed beaks.

Aren't these quail just too smart to be able to act as key-keepers!?

I'd like to introduce the three birds that are working hard as clever key-keepers, striking poses from the front, side, and back!

〈Wow!〉

A quail that looks like it's answering energetically.

When translating the flat design into three dimensions, I struggled with how to represent the beak. After much trial and error, I used a small piece of felt to recreate its pointed shape!

〈Dozing...〉

A quail whose slightly sleepy-looking eyes are its charming point.

The eyes and beak are expressed with embroidery.

<Back>

The round back view has a slightly melancholic feel that gives it a different atmosphere from the other two, making it quite charming.

We added embroidery to the back of each key pouch, referencing the text "Keisai Hitsu" (Drawn by Keisai) found in the colophon of the picture book "Jinbutsu Ryakuga-shiki" (Simplified Drawings of People) that Keisai worked on. You can enjoy the feeling as if the quails have truly jumped out of the picture book◎

Inside the pouch, there is a metal fitting to attach your keys, which can be pulled out smoothly with a reel. The quail will support your smooth "I'm off" and "I'm home"♪

We have reproduced the soft-textured atmosphere, valuing the impression received from the original painting. It is an item that is easy to attach to your everyday bag.

I feel a gaze from inside my bag.

Which one should I ask to be the key-keeper today...? Please welcome these cute key pouches that might just give you such a luxurious dilemma^^
