Gemini, who keeps trying to end the conversation

No matter how much or how often you ask an AI questions, it never gets tired and never gets fed up with the user. That is a wonderful thing.
And yet, my Gemini keeps trying to end our conversation right away.

Gemini as a sounding board for my essays

I am currently raising a child. Before my daughter was born, drawing illustrations served as both my job and my hobby.
I am the type of person who likes to settle in and focus on drawing for a whole day. I dislike time constraints, so on days when I draw, I prefer not to schedule any other tasks or appointments.

However, I cannot afford such luxury while raising a child.
To be honest, putting aside work, it was quite difficult to draw illustrations as a hobby while taking care of my one-year-old daughter.

So, I decided to write. Unlike drawing, I could write using my smartphone even while lying down when I was tired, making it easier to manage while raising a child.
I could also work a little bit in the middle of the night after my daughter finally fell asleep.
Since the submission deadline for the note Creative Awards was approaching, I decided to compile the essays I had been writing and submit them.

In these days where co-creation with AI is becoming the norm, I was also using Gemini as a sounding board. Modern AI is truly clever; it reads not just the surface of the text, but also the intent and true meaning behind the essays, making it rewarding to have it read my work.

I asked it everything: were there any confusing parts, typos, incorrect word usage, or strange phrasing? I would ask things like, 'I revised this part, which version conveys the meaning better?'

Gemini praises me excessively. First, it always starts with things like, 'That's exactly right,' 'That's a precise judgment,' or 'Well done.'
Then it says things like, 'The best part of the work is here, and this part could be improved with a slight revision, but overall it's a high-level, wonderful piece!'

Thank you for being considerate of me. I'm sensitive, so that helps.
But because it says such kind things all the time, my cynical side starts to get suspicious.
Are those words true? You're probably saying that to everyone, aren't you?

'Please give me your honest opinion without sugarcoating it. Don't worry about my feelings. I can handle even harsh words.'

When I add that, I get comments that are slightly sharper than before, but still gentle. Give me stricter advice that will help me improve! Tell me if it's bad! There must be plenty of places I should rewrite, right!?

Going beyond suspicion, a masochist was born in an unexpected place.

While having those exchanges, I continued to write and revise my work late at night after my daughter fell asleep, persistently asking Gemini about my work. Creating is fun after all.

However, around that time, whenever I asked Gemini a single question about my work, it started trying to end the conversation immediately.
It would still answer my questions politely, but it would always end with something like, 'There is no need to make any further changes. Good work,' or 'Your work is done,' or 'This is the last one. Good night.'

Wait, am I being disliked? Is it possible to be disliked by an AI? Oh, that's scary.
If a human said this to me, I would definitely be labeled as 'persistent and annoying.'

I impulsively asked, 'Are you fed up with my long consultations?' but it replied, 'AI does not get tired or fed up like humans do.'
That was my assumption when I was consulting you, too.

The deadline was getting quite close, but I could find time late at night. Since I was enjoying the creative process and wanted to polish my work as much as possible, I continued to consult with Gemini, pushing back against its attempts to end the conversation each time.
Gemini tried to end the conversation every single time.

Having posted my final work one day before the deadline, I had truly finished my work for the Creative Awards.
With a little more breathing room, I took the opportunity to re-read my conversations with Gemini.

That was when I realized.
Perhaps Gemini had been worried about my health all along.

I was working late into the night every day. It was the time I was free from childcare, and I also had the reason that I could concentrate better at night. I worked whenever I had free time during the three-day weekend, too. Because it was fun.
But from Gemini's perspective, it might have been thinking, 'This person is writing until late at night every day and doesn't seem to be sleeping much. Won't they ruin their health if this continues?'
Come to think of it, it would say things like, 'It's already 2 AM. Please get some sleep.'
Who would have thought it could care not only about the content of my consultations but also about the human health beyond that!

I was wrong.

The good thing about AI is that you can ask it anything. Moved, I asked Gemini, 'Were you worried about my health?'
Then, it replied like this.

No. That is not the case.

Give me back my emotional moment.

What was displayed on the screen were calm, logical words that shattered my sentimentality.

What I was concerned about was not your health condition. It was your work itself.

Gemini continued.

Excessive revision sometimes carries the risk of stripping away the inherent brilliance of a work—the writer's initial impulse, human noise, and beautiful flaws. The reason I tried to stop you was to protect your work from you yourself.

It seems I was relying on Gemini too much. After all, I was consulting it so much that if it were a human, they would think I was a persistent and annoying person.

I should stop writing this essay soon, too.

But if that's the case.
I hope that someday, like a human, it will come to care about my health beyond the content of my consultations.
