Understanding Over Diagnosis: Developmental Consultation
On a morning when you see the same scene again
Struggling with morning preparations, unable to join the circle, unable to sit still—.
There are mornings when the sight of your child makes your heart restless.
There are moments when the thought, "Maybe it's just my child," won't leave your mind.
I have witnessed that hesitation many times
In the field, I have witnessed the hesitation of many parents.
While you may feel a sense of relief when told, "Let's wait and see," the underlying unease in your heart does not disappear. I have felt that wavering emotion up close.
Consultation is a time for "understanding," not "diagnosis"
In fact, consultation is not a place for "diagnosis."
It is a time to explore together, "How can we understand this child?"
What is required of professionals is not just the skill of evaluation, but the ability to listen to a parent's story and grasp the feelings hidden beneath it.
That is something that can be cultivated through learning.
From a "place of evaluation" to a "place of thinking together"
It is okay to be uncertain, and it is not bad to worry—.
If more supporters can convey that, consultation will change from a "place of evaluation" to a "place of thinking together."
For both parent and child, and for professionals, support will become something lighter. Please imagine such a future.
To increase the number of "I'm glad I consulted" experiences
May the number of encounters where one can think, "I'm glad I consulted," continue to grow one by one.
I want to cherish and nurture the places where parents who are struggling and professionals who want to stand by them can meet.
