[Told by a UTokyo Graduate] Tips for Your Daily English Study
Hello, I am Innyanko, and I post content related to English conversation (for my note, please refer to Guide to Innyanko's English Conversation Struggle).
Currently, I use four methods for my studies: NativeCamp, Speak, watching overseas dramas, and transcription.
This time, I thought I would talk about the tips I use in these studies.
NativeCamp

<Tips>
・Do not prepare
・Do not look at the English text much during lessons
・Prioritize quick response over correct English
・Imitate the instructor's English
・Review thoroughly
I take NativeCamp lessons with the goal of improving my English conversation skills.
And, something I have been working on recently is training my listening skills.
Specifically, I take on lessons without preparation, and during the lesson, I try to avoid looking at the English text as much as possible and interact mainly using information from my ears.
For example, when I choose Daily News, I don't look at the questions and instead listen to what the instructor reads aloud and respond to it.
Instead, I choose slightly easier study materials.
This is quite difficult, but it makes for good training.
Also, I try to review thoroughly after the lesson.
Furthermore, regarding NativeCamp, I have explored it in depth in the following article.
Speak

<Things I am doing>
・Continue every day
・About 20 minutes a day
・Focus on review
The purpose of Speak is to learn phrases useful for speaking.
Therefore, even if it is for a short time, I continue every day and make review my main focus.
Specifically, I do a 10-minute smart review before working on the regular tasks.
In the first place, Speak itself is designed to encourage frequent review, so by using this method, I end up reviewing the same expressions many times.
Thanks to this, a virtuous cycle is created where I use the phrases I learned in Speak during NativeCamp, and I can feel that my vocabulary is increasing.

Watching foreign dramas

<Things I do to improve>
・Analyze each line of dialogue
・Use techniques like shadowing for detailed listening
・Repeat many times
・Don't focus on moving forward
Currently, I am using SUITS as my material and watching it to strengthen my listening skills.
My goal is to be able to understand native English, so when I watch the drama, I stop it one by one to analyze the audio.
For example, if there is a line like "What are you thinking about it?", I analyze the linking, elision, accent, speed, and rhythm.
Once I have done that, I repeat overlapping, shadowing, and reading aloud, and drill the analysis results into my head.
Since I proceed like this, I don't make much progress at all lol
However, since the goal is not to move forward, I am taking my time with this.
The story about SUITS is introduced in detail below.
Copying

<Tips>
・Understand the meaning while reading aloud and copying
・Try to memorize as much as possible while copying
・Be conscious of chunks
The purpose of copying is to form an English-speaking brain.
Therefore, I try to understand the meaning while reading aloud and copying, and I make sure not to rely on Japanese.
Also, to retain English in my memory for even a little longer, I try to memorize as much as possible while copying.
Summary

<Summary>
・NativeCamp: No preparation, don't look at the English text
・Speak: Continue daily, focus on review
・Watching foreign dramas: Thoroughly analyze the lines
・Copying: Forming an English-speaking brain
