At the end of the lecture, Mr. Tomano said,“People forget 80% of what they hear. Please be sure to output it.”And so,

As an output, I will write these notes primarily for myself, and for those who might need them.

■ About 150 years ago, public education spread throughout the world.

For 10,000 years of human history, eras continued where killing each other was entertainment, people were killed for having different religions, and slavery and violence were the norm for different races.

One of the major reasons we were able to escape from that was

the invention of democracy and the invention of public education.

● The transition of the purpose of schools

The beginning: Enriching the country and strengthening the military, and promoting industry. Now: To foster the power to live freely, based on cultivating the sensitivity of 'mutual recognition of freedom' in all children.

The purpose has changed, but the structure has remained the same as it was 150 years ago.

In other words,schools are still in the process of maturing. The system will continue to be updated.

■ The Meiji school system has remained almost unchanged for 150 years

・The structure of Japanese schools is almost the same as it was during the Meiji founding period ・Europe was once similar ・The Meiji government built 20,000 schools nationwide in just 5 years ・The purpose was

enriching the country and strengthening the military / promoting industry
・Not for freedom or the dignity of the individual, but for creating citizens for the state

What remains in the structure

・Japanese language education = Standardization of Japanese (an era when dialects were punished)
・Physical education/Sports day = Remnants of military education
・Uniforms and school backpacks (randoseru)
・Grade and class system

■ Democracy

・General Will (Rousseau)
　Creating this society together based solely on the legitimate grounds of agreements that serve the common interest, found by bringing everyone's wills together. → Majority rule is not the essence of democracy.

・Forming consensus through dialogue

・The essence of learning is also Experience × Dialogue

・Co-creation

■ About the Constitution

・Rules to monitor the state, which holds immense power.
・The direction of the arrow is from the people to the state.
・It is a provision of rights. Provisions of duties are essentially an afterthought of an afterthought. In some foreign countries, there are only provisions of rights. (However, many people think they are provisions of duties.)

■ What are rules (including laws)?
・Guaranteeing the freedom of all people as a rule.
・Freedom is not something given from above, but something we create together to become free.
・Rules should be based on the Constitution at the top, but for some reason, school rules have become like extraterritorial rights.

■ What is the purpose of school in the first place?

To that end, let's turn schools into learning centers where diversity is mixed together.

Tomano-san has been saying this for 20 years, and he mentioned that he stood at the entrance 5 years ago, and now he has finally taken '2-3 steps' inside.

*Philosophy is great, isn't it? It questions the very foundation, thinks things through, and derives an answer for the current moment. Then, it places that in an open forum and questions again whether there is an even deeper bottom.
It is precisely because that foundation exists that we can build upon specifics like a good society or good education.

*A lecture at Fukuoka Prefectural Tachibana High School. Although I arrived late, I was able to spend a very meaningful time there. It seems there was a live stream, but I am glad I went in person.

It is grateful that there are more opportunities to participate as lectures are increasingly being live-streamed for those far away, but there is something that is conveyed directly by going whenever possible, so I decided that I will continue to go whenever I can in the future.

The benefits of the internet and the benefits of reality will likely continue to merge. It is a good era.

Although the attendees seemed to be mainly faculty, staff, and parents, the atmosphere of the lecture itself was relaxed—with people taking notes on tablets or smartphones, being free to hydrate, and students acting as moderators—which deepened the motivation to learn.
