ミズヒキ　葉に刻まれた下駄の鼻緒マークが意味するメッセージ

水引 （ミズヒキ）

ナデシコ目、タデ科、イヌタデ属の多年生草本

夏の終わり頃から秋にかけて可愛い花を咲かせる
植物だが、この葉には特徴的な紋様が入る。

アルファベットの『Ｖ』の文字、あるいは『八』、
『下駄の鼻緒』にも喩えられる紋様であるのだが
これに意味はあるのか？についての記事である。

ミズヒキは、タデ科に分類される植物であって
実はこのタデ科の植物の多くに特徴的な紋様が
葉に入っているのが確認できるもの。

犬蓼 （イヌタデ）、柳蓼（ヤナギタデ）、姫蔓蕎麦
（ヒメツルソバ）、などがその共通した特徴を持つ
植物となっている。

これらに共通するのは、植物の葉を専門に食す
鹿が、食のリストから外している部類に属して
いる事にある。

これらには、鹿の忌避物質が含まれている事、
水分が少ない為に食感が悪い事、栄養価が低く
食べるに適さない事、などがその理由となる。

鹿がこれらの葉に近づいてきた時点でその紋様
から『食べても不味いですよ』のサインとして
認識されるものと考えられる。

では、絶対にこれを食べないかと云うと、その
地域に鹿の個体数が増え過ぎ、飢餓状態に陥る
場合には例外として食べるのだと云われ、背に
腹は変えられぬ状況下に於いては、この警告の
マークすらも意味を成さない事となる。

Mizuhiki is a charming plant that blooms with tiny,
delicate flowers from late summer to autumn. One
of its notable features is the unique pattern found
on its leaves.


This pattern has been likened to the letter “V,” the
Japanese character “八” (hachi), or even the straps
of a traditional wooden sandal (geta).


This article explores whether these distinctive
patterns hold any meaning.

Mizuhiki belongs to the Polygonaceae family, and
many other plants in this family also display similar
leaf markings.

Examples include Inutade (Persicaria longiseta),
Yanagitade (Persicaria hydropiper), and Himetsurusoba
(Persicaria capitata), all of which share this common
trait.


What unites these plants is that they are generally
avoided by deer, which normally feed heavily on foliage.
Reasons for this avoidance include the presence of
deer-repelling substances, low moisture content
(leading to poor texture), and low nutritional value,
making them unappealing as food.


It is believed that the distinctive patterns on the
leaves serve as a kind of visual warning signal to deer,
effectively saying, “This is not good to eat.”

However, this doesn’t mean deer will absolutely
never eat them. In areas where deer populations are
excessively high and food sources become scarce,
deer may eat these plants out of desperation.
In such situations, the “warning mark” loses its
effectiveness—survival overrides selectivity.
