[6 Years in the UK] Our Family Weekend! Movie Night🎬
Hello! I'm Kiko, an EDUBAL ambassador.
This time, I'd like to share our family's classic weekend evening routine from our time in the UK. If I had to name one thing we often did as a family, or sometimes during sleepovers with friends, it was... watching movies!
When it was 'Movie Night tonight!', we would sometimes have dinner while watching a movie, or prepare snacks like popcorn and drinks, claim our spots on the sofa, and enjoy it all together!
The information gained by watching movies and enjoying them through both eyes and ears must have played a huge role in improving my children's English!
After all, fantasy and adventure movies are easy to watch as a family. Please note that this is just a personal example, but I would like to list some recommended family movies that you can enjoy together!
(Please understand that I am not a movie buff at all, so this list is based on my own viewing experience🙏)

For our members, we provide information on returning student entrance exams and schools, as well as announcements for member-exclusive events.

🎥Focus on animation when they are young!
Ballerina—My daughter also did ballet. It's packed with a girl's dreams♡
Zootopia—Why are foxes always the villains?? The story is also thought-provoking!
COCO—The music is great! There are some parts that are hard to understand, like the afterlife, but thanks to that, we watched it many times!
How To Train Your Dragon—I was surprised that the anime was aired on Japanese TV! British boys at the time were obsessed with it, and many kids even dressed up as these characters.
Mr Incredibles—A fast-paced, thrilling story about an unbelievable family!
🎥For around age 10, add fantasy and adventure elements!
The Kid Who Would Be King—A story based on the legend of King Arthur.
Yes Day—A guaranteed hit with kids! I'd love to try it in our home, but I don't have the courage!
The Parent Trap—A film adaptation of the children's novel 'Lottie and Lisa'.
Home Alone—It's truly an enduringly popular work that everyone can enjoy.
Jumanji—The movie 'Next Level' was released while we were in the UK, but we watched the original one starring Robin Williams as a family!
🎥Starring lovable characters!
Peter Rabbit—A comedy movie about wild rabbits living in the Lake District of England!
Paddington—An adventure story about a bear who comes to London from Peru!
🎥Add an essence of laughter with comedy and action!
Mrs. Doubtfire—It's an old film, but the kids loved it. Above all, Robin Williams is wonderful.
the Karate Kid—A remake of 'The Karate Kid' featuring Will Smith's son and Jackie Chan as master and student!
The Mighty Ducks—This is also old, but it's a story about rebuilding a weak ice hockey team!
Home Team—This one is about American football! You can't go wrong with sports movies!
🎥Sometimes serious with heart-pounding developments!
Harry Potter—The books, of course, are a familiar British masterpiece!
Fantastic Beasts—A spin-off of the Harry Potter series, with 3 out of 5 planned films already released.
The Lord of the Rings—A film adaptation of a long British novel, a grand fantasy adventure story, a trilogy worth watching!
The Hobbits—This depicts the story 60 years before The Lord of the Rings. There are 3 films for this as well.
The Hunger Games—The original work is an American novel of the same title. Be careful as there are many serious scenes⚠
🎬️Movie Night📽️
Watching movies together is also recommended for playdates with your children's friends. Especially when we first moved to the UK and weren't used to English yet, my children and I went to the cinema a lot. Sharing fun times outside of school is a great way to become friends.
We even held a screening of the Japanese film 'My Neighbor Totoro' (be careful, as the parent-child bathing scene can be culturally sensitive overseas⚠) for my daughter's friends at our house!

Gradually, they made specific close friends, and when it came to sleepovers, a movie night was always a set! Though for boys, getting excited watching sports together might be more fun than a movie.

We live in an era where you can easily watch movies anytime on Netflix and other platforms.
Even now, on weekends, my movie-loving husband and children are always bustling about deciding what to watch.
Recently, they watch movies based on books they read in English class at school as a way to preview them, and my daughter also watches movies of books she has finished reading.
With movies, the children are completely immersed in the world of English, and I am nothing but envious!
Movies that also help maintain English after returning to Japan, please try to make a habit of having family movie nights and spend a fun weekend moment together🎞️
