AT&T / AT&T Inc. (T) Earnings Analysis | Revenue +2.9%, Adjusted EPS +12%, High-Dividend Telecom Stock Re-growing via Fiber x 5G Convergence [FY2026 Q1 English Commentary]
This article is a Japanese translation and analysis of the 10-Q (quarterly report) filed with the SEC EDGAR (the U.S. securities report database). Although there is a time lag of a few days from the earnings announcement, the 10-Q contains more detailed financial data, allowing for a deeper understanding of the company's actual situation.
The 'convergence' strategy of selling fiber optics and mobile lines in a single plan is finally beginning to show in the numbers. AT&T's 10-Q filed on April 26, 2026, is the first quarter to incorporate the acquisition of Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber business (closed in February 2026), with revenue up 2.9% year-over-year and adjusted EPS up 12%, confirming steady growth. With a stock price of $26.22 (as of April 2026) and a dividend yield of 4.2%, this is a noteworthy timing for investors looking to balance defensiveness and growth.
Summary of this earnings report (3 lines)
・Revenue of $31.5 billion (+2.9% YoY) and adjusted EPS of $0.57 (+12%) exceeded market expectations
・Net additions in three areas simultaneously: Fiber +292K, Fixed Wireless +292K, and Postpaid Mobile +294K
・Executed $2.28 billion in share buybacks and $2.00 billion in dividends in Q1, totaling $4.3 billion in shareholder returns
Company Overview
In short, it is one of the largest telecommunications carriers in the U.S., a massive infrastructure company generating stable cash flow through the three pillars of 5G, fiber optics, and a convergence strategy. Consolidated revenue is $125.6 billion annually (2025 results, approx. 20 trillion yen), market capitalization is approx. $188 billion (approx. 30 trillion yen), and there are approx. 7.17 billion shares outstanding.
The segments disclosed in the 10-Q have been reorganized into three: 'Advanced Connectivity' (5G + Fiber + Enterprise), 'Legacy' (traditional fixed-line/copper), and 'Latin America' (Mexico operations). The EBITDA margin for Advanced Connectivity is 40.6%, maintaining a high level for a major telecom company.
Three Key Points of the Quarter
Point 1: Revenue +2.9%, Adjusted EPS Growth Accelerated to +12%

Q1 2026 revenue was $31.5 billion (approx. 5.0 trillion yen), up 2.9% year-over-year. GAAP diluted EPS fell to $0.54 from $0.61 in the previous year, but this was affected by one-time gains related to the DIRECTV stake in the same period last year and amortization/adjustment items related to the Lumen acquisition this quarter. Adjusted EPS, which reflects the actual situation, was $0.57 (previous year $0.51, +12%), confirming double-digit growth.
The balance between operating cash flow, dividends, and share buybacks is also clear, with $2.00 billion in dividends and $2.28 billion in share buybacks (approx. 88M shares) executed in Q1 alone. On January 27, a new $10B share buyback program was approved, and subtracting the Q1 consumption of $2.28B from the $13.45B total (including the existing $3.45B quota), the remaining quota is approx. $11.17B.
Point 2: Simultaneous Net Additions in 3 Axes, Convergence Penetrating

Subscriber trends were strong in all three categories. Postpaid mobile net additions were 294K with a churn rate of less than 1% (within industry standards), fiber net additions were 292K (273K of which were consumer), and fixed wireless internet 'Internet Air' net additions were 292K. Total net additions for Advanced Connectivity internet contracts were 584K, recording the fastest pace ever with the inclusion of Lumen assets.
What is noteworthy is the increase in the convergence rate. The ratio of broadband internet contract households bundled with AT&T wireless services reached 42% (45% excluding the impact of Lumen-acquired customers), which the company describes as the 'fastest convergence growth rate ever.' Two effects—lower churn rate per customer and maintenance of ARPU—are occurring simultaneously, impacting both profitability and loyalty.
Operating income for the Advanced Connectivity segment was $6.85 billion (previous year $5.97 billion, +14.8%), EBITDA was $11.56 billion (+5.6%), and the operating margin improved from 22.0% to 24.1%. The Legacy segment is being planned for reduction at $0.61 billion (-39.9%), and Latin America has an operating income of $0.02 billion (-53.5%) due to additional investment in Mexico operations.
Point 3: Fiber Locations at 37M via Lumen Acquisition, Net Debt Requires Attention
In February 2026, AT&T completed the acquisition of Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber business, and total fiber locations expanded to over 37M (of which 4M are from Lumen). The acquisition price was approx. $5.75B, a spin-out deal where Lumen retains the enterprise business.
Although the relationship with over 1 million customers from Lumen will be incorporated into AT&T, some of the acquired network assets will be transferred to a subsidiary (designated as held-for-sale) and are planned to be jointly owned with an equity partner in the future. Therefore, it should be viewed as a fiber expansion strategy conscious of capital efficiency rather than a simple, fully in-house expansion.
Financially, in parallel with this acquisition, the company signed a $17.5B delayed-draw term loan in November 2025 ($6B 364-day facility + $11.5B 2-year facility) (undrawn as of March 2026). Furthermore, in March, it concluded a $1.5B bilateral term loan (maturing in 2031 and 2033).
Net debt at the end of Q1 was $126.4B (approx. 20 trillion yen), with total debt at $138.4B and a debt ratio of 52.0% (50.9% in the same period last year). The net debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio at the end of Q1 was 2.71x. The company expects this to temporarily rise to 3.2x after the closing of the separately ongoing EchoStar transaction (acquisition of spectrum assets from the company), while aiming to return to the 2.5x level in about three years. For the time being, it is a phase that requires monitoring of the balance sheet.
Biggest Risk: Interest Payment Pressure on $126.4B in Net Debt
The biggest structural risk is the scale of the $126.4B in net debt (approx. 20 trillion yen) itself. Against an annual FCF outlook of over $18B, the debt principal is 7 times that amount, and in a rising interest rate environment, refinancing costs directly squeeze EPS and dividend capacity. While maintaining an investment-grade rating, the structure is such that if a rating downgrade occurs, interest rate increases linked to the rating will occur in a chain reaction.
The four quantitative indicators to monitor are as follows.
・Net Debt / Adjusted EBITDA Ratio: 2.71x at the end of Q1. The company's goal is to return to the 2.5x level in about 3 years after rising to 3.2x after the EchoStar transaction. A warning level is above 3.5x
・FCF: Annual guidance of over $18B; if it falls below $15B, there is a possibility of reviewing dividend and share buyback plans
・Advanced Connectivity EBITDA Growth Rate: Company target +6%; if it falls below +3%, it is a signal of a slowdown in the convergence strategy
・Dividend Payout Ratio: Approximately 44% based on the full-year FCF guidance of over $18B (annual dividend $7.96B ÷ FCF $18B). However, in Q1 alone, the dividend was $1.997B against FCF of $2.506B, reaching a payout ratio of 79.7%, so the key is whether FCF accumulates as planned in the second half.
The 10-Q also discloses that a class-action lawsuit related to the 2025 data breach is ongoing. The financial impact is expected to be limited, but regulatory compliance costs will continue to be incurred.
Author's View
My judgment is leaning towards buy. With a dividend yield in the 4% range, a full-year FCF outlook of over $18B, and adjusted EPS guidance of $2.25 to $2.35, the stock price around $26 is about 11x based on adjusted EPS, so there is no excessive sense of overvaluation as a telecom stock. However, because it carries $126.4B in net debt, it is not a simple high-dividend stock, and it is appropriate to position it as a value-type defensive stock to be held while confirming the progress of deleveraging.

Comparing the three telecom companies, AT&T is in a 'moderate and balanced' position. While Verizon has a high dividend yield of 6.3%, its net debt is around $140B, which is slightly heavier than AT&T's, and its stock price is left undervalued. T-Mobile is a growth premium type with a forward P/E of 20x and a dividend yield of about 1.5%, and AT&T is positioned in between. Investors can choose based on their preferences (Verizon for income, T-Mobile for growth, and AT&T for balance).
The dividend payout ratio based on full-year FCF guidance is $7.96B ÷ $18B = approx. 44%, and the risk of a dividend cut is low. However, in Q1 alone, the payout ratio rose to 79.7% with a dividend of $1.997B against FCF of $2.506B, assuming that FCF will accumulate as planned in the second half. Rather, there is a possibility of resuming dividend increases around 2027-2028 when the net debt/EBITDA ratio reaches 2.5x (the current $1.11 is the level maintained after the Warner Media spin-off in 2022).
The total returns for the three scenarios are as follows.
・Bullish Scenario: 2026 Adjusted EPS $2.45 x P/E 13x = approx. $32 (+22%) + Dividend 4.2% = Total Return +26%. Successful Lumen integration + resumption of dividend increases
・Base Scenario: 2026 Adjusted EPS $2.35 x P/E 12x = approx. $28 (+7%) + Dividend 4.2% = Total Return +11%. Current convergence strategy continues as is
・Bearish Scenario: 2026 Adjusted EPS $2.20 x P/E 9x = approx. $20 (-24%) + Dividend 4.2% = Total Return -20%. Difficult Lumen integration, large-scale data breach, sharp rise in interest rates
The current stock price of $26.22 is near the lower end of the base scenario range of $25-30, and the combination of upside potential to the bullish scenario and dividend receipt is attractive. I recommend it as a high-dividend, value-oriented stock that meets three or more buy indicators.
Future Business Outlook
Confidence: High ── Continuation of Fiber + 5G Convergence
Total fiber locations have reached over 37M, and the convergence rate of 42% (45% excluding the impact of Lumen-acquired customers) is rising at the 'fastest pace ever' disclosed by the company. In Q1, it achieved net additions in all three axes (postpaid mobile +294K, fiber +292K, fixed wireless +292K), and I judge that the momentum for the time being is the most certain. The full-scale contribution of Lumen assets is expected to expand from Q2 2026 onwards.
Confidence: Medium ── Achieving FCF of over $18B and Maintaining Dividends
Q1 FCF was $2.5B, down from $3.1B in the same period last year, but the company reaffirmed its 2026 full-year FCF guidance of over $18B. The total dividend of $7.96B (about 44% of FCF) is at a level that can be sufficiently covered. However, since net interest expense will fluctuate depending on the timing of the $17.5B term loan drawdown and the interest rate environment, it is necessary to verify the pace of FCF recovery from Q2 onwards on a quarterly basis.
Confidence: Low ── Timing of Dividend Increase Resumption
The net debt/EBITDA ratio is expected to reach the 2.5x level at the earliest in 2027, and realistically in 2028. Until then, the dividend is highly likely to remain fixed at $1.11/year, meaning the resumption of dividend growth is at least 1 to 2 years away. This is a mismatch if you are looking for short-term dividend growth.
Summary

AT&T is steadily executing its fiber + 5G convergence strategy, and in Q1, we confirmed results in the form of net subscriber additions across three axes and a 12% increase in adjusted EPS. With the addition of 4M locations through the Lumen acquisition, the growth engine for 2026-2027 is already loaded; however, the $126.4B in net debt remains a point of monitoring.
Overall Judgment: Leaning Buy. As a value-oriented defensive stock with a dividend yield in the 4% range, a forward P/E of approximately 11x, and a full-year FCF outlook exceeding $18B, the $26 level is a suitable entry point for core holdings. Rather than short-term price gains, this is recommended on the premise of aiming for total returns over a 5-year span through a combination of dividend receipts and gradual stock price appreciation.
