[Self-Introduction] Summary of Experiences Applied to Karaoke: Sports, Strength Training, Rhythm Games, and Work

It has been about 7 months since I started taking karaoke seriously.
I began participating in the JOYSOUND National Scoring GP, and as my rankings and scores gradually improved, I became hooked.

Now, my highest score has reached 98.370 points, and my average for the top 10 has grown to the 95-96 point range. (As of May 22, 2025)

As I kept thinking about things like "How can I get better?" and "What is the reason my score for this song isn't improving?"—I realized that my past experiences were surprisingly useful for karaoke.

In this note, as part of my self-introduction, I have summarized my background, habits, and mindset that I believe have been helpful for karaoke. I hope this serves as a hint for those who love singing, those working hard on their own, and those who want to apply their areas of expertise to singing.

■ Achievements (JOYSOUND National Scoring GP)

  • Participating in the Monthly Grand Prix (every month)

  • Highest score: 98.370 points

  • Highest total score for top 10: around 959 points

  • Highest national ranking: top 7%

■ Sports Experience

・Volleyball (3 years, club activities)
Maintaining posture, core stability, explosive power, and sustained concentration. This directly translates to steadiness and stable vocalization while singing.

・Karate (5 years)
The sensation of projecting voice from the core and how to channel spirit have become second nature. During my student days, I also had the experience of
placing runner-up in the heavyweight division of a regional tournament, which cultivated my mental strength and high level of momentary focus.

・Badminton
I have achievements including winning doubles/runner-up in singles at adult tournaments. It is a sport that utilizes reaction speed, sense of rhythm, and concentration, which also influences my vocalization and how I handle dynamics.

・Full Marathon (completed twice)
The sense of stamina and physical condition management is a major advantage for long sessions of solo karaoke or continuous singing. My voice remains stable even in songs toward the end.

■ Strength Training Habits (chocoZAP, municipal gym)

  • Shoulder press 70kg x 15 reps x 3 sets

  • Ab bench 300 reps x 1 set

  • Lat pulldown 90kg x 10 reps

  • Chest press 85kg x 80 reps x 1 set, etc.

  • Leg press: 105kg per leg x 50 reps x 1 set

  • Jumping squats: 100 reps x 3 sets, etc.

*Please note that the weight you can handle varies by manufacturer, so this is for reference only.

Strength training has improved my posture, making it easier to achieve stable breathing, increased vocal volume, and sustained long tones. In particular, strengthening my chest and back muscles has directly contributed to the resonance and depth of my singing voice.

■ Rhythm Game Experience

・Pop'n Music (equivalent to 8th Dan)
This trained my ability to perceive irregular time signatures and rhythm changes, as well as my ability to look ahead. Thanks to my sense of sheet music, I can sing even fast-paced songs steadily.

・jubeat (cleared around Lv.10)
This cultivated my instantaneous judgment and rhythm recognition, which helps me grasp the timing for vocal entries and breaths.

・DJ MAX RAY
(Ranked 981st / 319,073 players → Top 0.31%)
I reached a level of less than 3 people per 10,000.
A smartphone rhythm game.

・Japanese Taiko Drumming (performance level at tourist spots)
This cultivated my sense of dynamics, timing, and how to keep rhythm with my whole body, which I apply to the inflection and groove of my singing.

■ Mindset Acquired Through Work

My current job mainly consists of repeating similar routines every day, but by thoroughly applying the **PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) learned through my QC (Quality Control) certification** to those routines, I strive to achieve results that I am satisfied with.

This habit is directly applied to karaoke as well, and I repeat trial and error for improvement daily, such as "analyzing the cause of pitch deviation → reviewing my breathing → adjusting inflection → trying again."

■ Summary ~Consistency and Improvement Change Everything~

I feel that consistency, trial and error, and the accumulation of improvements are truly important for getting better at karaoke. You won't get better all at once, but by continuing to think about "why my score isn't improving" and making small improvements, the results will definitely change.

In my case, the elements I have acquired through sports, strength training, rhythm games, and work have unexpectedly all become assets for karaoke.
I will continue to cherish that mindset while facing karaoke both fun and seriously.

*In the future, I plan to summarize "songs that are easy to get high scores on," "songs that are difficult to improve on," and "artists I am good at." I would be happy if you follow or like this if you are interested.
