[Notes] 🎯 Understanding the 5 Stages of Learning through "Karaoke" and "Strength Training" 🎤🏋️
The "stages of learning" can feel a bit abstract and hard to visualize, right?
But if you replace them with karaoke or strength training, they suddenly feel very real.
This time, I will explain the 5-stage model of learning using examples close to real-life experience.
📌 What are the 5 stages of learning?
The following five stages are often discussed in the fields of psychology and education.
Unconscious Incompetence (not realizing you cannot do it)
Conscious Incompetence (realizing you cannot do it)
Conscious Competence (can do it if you focus)
Unconscious Competence (can do it naturally without thinking)
Ability to Teach Others (can explain it with reproducibility)
🎤 The 5 stages in karaoke
① Unconscious Incompetence
A state where you "tried to sing thinking you could, but your pitch was completely off."
This is the stage where you haven't realized yet that you are bad at it.
② Conscious Incompetence
"I listened to the recording and it was off-key" or "I was confronted with a low score on the scoring machine."
This is when you first understand that you are not good at it.
③ Conscious Competence
By repeating practice and scoring, you can get high scores by consciously adding inflection and vibrato.
It still requires effort, but you can definitely feel yourself improving.
④ Unconscious Competence
When you hold the microphone, you can naturally control rhythm, volume, and inflection.
A state where you "can consistently score over 90 points without even thinking."
⑤ Ability to Teach Others
The stage where you can explain to others "how to get a high score" and guide them on areas for improvement.
You have evolved from someone who is "good at singing" to someone who "can teach singing."
🏋️ The 5 Stages in Strength Training
1. Unconscious Incompetence
You don't know the correct form, but you lift heavy weights and "think you're strength training."
But in reality, not only are you not seeing results, you're at high risk of injury.
2. Conscious Incompetence
You realize, "It's not working" or "I'm not building any muscle at all."
You learn from videos or at the gym and understand, "My way of doing it was wrong."
3. Conscious Competence
You train carefully while being conscious of your form.
You can actually feel it, like "It's hitting my chest!" or "I can feel it in my back!"
4. Unconscious Competence
Whether it's bench presses or squats, you can do them naturally without thinking about the form.
It has become a habit, and the correct way is ingrained in your body.
5. Able to Teach Others
You are at a level where you can instruct beginners on form or advise them on weight settings.
You have become "someone who can grow not only themselves but others as well."
✅ Summary
The essence of learning is
"knowing what you can't do → making a conscious effort → and internalizing it until you can do it unconsciously."
Whether it's karaoke or strength training, you go through the same steps to grow.
And the final stage is being able to "teach others."
In other words, sharing your own growth with others is the ultimate form of learning.
