The BMW 3 Series G20/G21: The 320i Sedan Was the Only Choice — A Clear Ranking After Driving 4 Models [Impression]
Prologue: I Drove All Four Combinations
BMW G20/G21 3 Series—320i and 320d xDrive, Sedan and Touring. There are a total of four combinations available as standard models: two powertrains and two body styles.
I drove all of them.
And not just for a short test drive.
I drove each one for a reasonable distance and amount of time.
City streets in Tokyo, the winding roads of the Boso Peninsula and Hakone, the coastal roads of the Miura Peninsula, and the C1 and various junctions of the Shuto Expressway. I spent over a week and covered 300 to 500 km behind the wheel of each model, with the total mileage well exceeding 1,000 km. This was not a catalog spec check or a short dealer test drive. It was enough time to verify the essence of this car in the real-world environment of daily life.
The four models had clearly different personalities. And those differences were not limited to engine characteristics or body shapes; they appeared as an answer to the question of how faithful the BMW 3 Series is to the "Sheer Driving Pleasure" it is supposed to embody.
I will give you the conclusion first. If you are looking for the taste of a sports car, the 320i sedan is the only choice.
However, it is meaningless if I do not explain the path that led to that conclusion. Someone who owns a sports car like a 911 or an Alpine A110 as their primary car does not look for "only practicality" in a second car. The joy of driving is also necessary. From that perspective, the four models appeared before me with a clear hierarchy.
Chapter 1: 320d xDrive — Powerful. But the Soul of BMW is Distant
The B47 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine mounted in the 320d xDrive produces 190 ps/4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm/1,750-2,500 rpm. On paper, it clearly surpasses the 320i (184 ps/300 Nm), and it is combined with BMW's pride, the electronically controlled all-wheel drive xDrive. If you look only at the spec sheet, this looks like the superior model.
In fact, there are merits. The stability of xDrive is solid, and you can step on the accelerator without hesitation even in the continuous tight corners of the Shuto Expressway C1. There are no complaints about traction in the rain. The 400 Nm of torque does not lose power even when carrying many passengers or a full load of luggage, and the combination with ACC during high-speed cruising definitely reduces fatigue on long trips. As a family car or a partner for long drives, this powertrain is a rational choice.
But the moment you drive it, you notice the weight.
The vehicle weight of the 320d xDrive sedan is 1,660 kg, and the Touring reaches 1,690 kg. This is an increase of 120 to 150 kg compared to the 1,540 kg of the 320i sedan. This difference is more serious than the numbers suggest, and it is clearly perceived during the continuous actions of driving as a slight "pause" between stepping on the accelerator and the car moving forward, and a "delay" between turning the steering wheel and the nose changing direction.
What is even more troublesome is the ambiguity that the xDrive's electronic control leaves in the handling. The merits that an FR BMW originally possesses—the nose responds honestly when you turn the steering wheel, the rear follows, and the chain of movement flows smoothly—that sensation is muddied. While cornering, the feedback regarding what posture the car is taking and how much traction the rear is generating is blurred. It feels as if an electronic interpreter is intervening between the front and rear wheels, blocking the dialogue with the driver.
There are also doubts about the torque characteristics of the B47 diesel. I have experience owning an F20 118d, but even though it is the same B47 family, the G20 320d xDrive has a different personality. The torque in the low-rpm range is thin, and it behaves like a so-called "on-off" turbo, where the torque surges rapidly the moment the boost pressure builds up. I felt it was a regression from the linear torque characteristics that the previous generation F30 320d had.
Here, one hypothesis emerges. There is a tendency for the 320d xDrive to have its engine characteristics set on the premise of a heavy body combined with xDrive. Perhaps it is set to intentionally suppress the low-rpm range and build up torque all at once in the rpm range where the turbo is effective, in order to move the heavy body powerfully. As a result, the "naturalness" of driving was sacrificed.

Fuel economy is also not as good as expected. 12-13 km/L in the city, 16 km/L on long trips. It is certainly better than the 320i (10 km/L in the city, 12 km/L on long trips), but it is far from the 20 km/L cruising that one expects from a diesel. It is stable. It is powerful. But overall, I don't feel like pushing it. The soul of BMW is thin here.
Chapter 2: 320i — The Pinnacle of Lightness Born from 10 Years of Maturation
B48 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline turbo. 184 ps/5,000 rpm, maximum torque 300 Nm/1,350-4,000 rpm. If you look only at the numbers, it is inferior to the 320d. 184 ps is modest by 2026 standards, and 300 Nm is only 75% of the 320d's 400 Nm.
But the moment you step on the accelerator pedal, the spec sheet becomes meaningless.
The car moves forward. The moment you turn the steering wheel, the nose points inward. The sensation that the driver's intention and the car's movement are synchronized—there is no "pause" or "delay" that was present in the 320d xDrive. What you want to do appears exactly as the car's movement. This is the true nature of what BMW has called "Sheer Driving Pleasure."

At the core of this agility is the lightness of the front end. The B48 gasoline engine is lighter than the B47 diesel, and it lacks the xDrive AWD system. As a result, the way the nose enters a corner is fundamentally different. You enter a corner and turn the steering wheel. The nose points inward naturally and immediately. This difference is so clear that it is hard to believe they share the same model name; it feels as if you have switched to a completely different car than the 320d xDrive.
I must speak about the B48 engine itself. It is a member of the BMW modular engine family that debuted in 2015, a unit perfected as the culmination of technologies BMW has cultivated for many years: twin-scroll turbo, Valvetronic (infinitely variable valve lift), and double VANOS (variable valve timing). The accumulation of improvements over approximately 10 years up to 2026 has brought this engine to an astonishing level of maturity. 300Nm of torque kicks in as early as 1,350rpm, and there is almost no perceptible turbo lag. In the mid-range, it pulls smoothly and linearly, and the response to throttle input is predictable and easy to control. Despite being a turbocharged engine, it has the natural feel of a naturally aspirated one. This "naturalness" is the B48's greatest virtue.
Compared to the N20 engine (184ps/270Nm) equipped in the previous F30 320i early models, the quality of the evolution is clear. The N20 was also an excellent turbo engine for its time, but there were moments when the 270Nm of torque felt insufficient for highway passing or steep hills. The B48 adds 30Nm to that and has also widened the low-end torque band. The joy of flooring the accelerator and downshifting remains, but the situations where you must do so have decreased. With the renewal to the CLAR platform, the chassis is about 55kg lighter than the F30 while torsional rigidity has improved by about 50%. The clarity of road feedback and the sharpness of steering response have clearly increased. The G20 320i is the legitimate evolution and final form of the F30 320i.
It is not without its weaknesses. The 184ps output can feel underpowered during passing acceleration, and the steering wheel of the G20 generation has a diameter and rim that are too large, which does not suit the car's agile character. And, for better or worse, the 320i is a "normal BMW 3 Series" and lacks the intense personality of a 6-cylinder like the M340i. It runs calmly and agilely. There is nothing particularly special about it. However, this car, which has an extremely sports-car-like ride despite being a passenger car, definitely embodies the essence of BMW.
Chapter 3: Sedan vs. Touring ── The Physical Law of Body Rigidity
Sedan and Touring. The difference between these two body styles is not the 20 liters of cargo capacity (Sedan 480L vs. Touring 500L). At the root is the physical constraint of body structure.
The virtue of the sedan is that the driving sensation is pure. The 3-box structure has a clearly divided line from the roof to the trunk lid, and the torsional rigidity of the entire body is high. Because the rear overhang is short and the center of gravity is within the wheelbase, the yaw moment of inertia is small. When you turn the steering wheel, the nose enters naturally, the rear follows, the behavior is easy to read, and the limits are easy to understand. In an age overflowing with minivans and SUVs, the sedan even looks like a sports car of the past. The styling is conservative, but that is also a virtue for a second car you will live with for 5 or 10 years: it does not get old.
The Touring has a charm that the sedan does not. An overwhelming capacity of 1,510L when the rear seats are folded down, the freedom of loading provided by the hatch gate, and above all, the highly tasteful appearance of the flowing lines drawn by the long roof. I think the G21 is one of the most beautiful wagons of the current generation.
However, the story changes when you drive it. Because the wagon body has a continuous line from the roof to the rear gate, the torsional rigidity is structurally lower than that of the sedan. The rear overhang is long, and the yaw moment of inertia is large. Even when you turn the steering wheel, the nose response is dull, and there is a slight delay in the rear's follow-through. A lethargy, as if you went for a run with a body that has put on a little fat, permeates the entire range of behavior. This difference is something that a driver sensitive to car movement will definitely perceive if they compare it to the sedan, and the claim by the public and critics that "you can hardly feel the difference in driving sensation even in the Touring" is a lie.

There is an important structural problem here. If you choose the Touring, you should choose the 320d xDrive, not the 320i. The 320i Touring reaches a vehicle weight of 1,570kg, but 300Nm of torque cannot move this weight agilely. When you put the 320i engine in the Touring body, the agility that was in the sedan is lost, and it lacks the power of the 320d—the most half-baked combination is born. Lacking the rigidity of the sedan and the torque reserve, this model is the furthest from "BMW-ness" among the four. Conversely, if you are looking for the agility and sports-car-like ride of the 320i, the sedan is the only choice.
Chapter 4: Coordinates of the German Three ── 320i vs. C200 vs. A4 40 TFSI
Having concluded that the 320i sedan is the best within BMW, one question remains. How does it compare to the German Big Three of the D-segment—the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4? To avoid ending this as a pro-BMW position talk, I will line it up with two rivals of the same generation.

The comparison subjects are the Mercedes-Benz C200 Avantgarde (W205 late model) and the Audi A4 40 TFSI Sport (B9 late model, FWD). Both are post-facelift models of the same era and are the most direct competitors as standard German Three gasoline sedans.
The design philosophies of the powertrains differ in three ways
The 320i's B48 is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo, 184ps/300Nm. It combines an FR layout with a ZF 8-speed torque converter AT. The Mercedes-Benz C200 late model's M264 is a 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo combined with a BSG (belt-driven starter generator) and a 48V electrical system, a so-called mild hybrid. The engine alone produces 184ps/280Nm, and the BSG assists with a maximum of 14ps/160Nm. It uses a 9G-TRONIC (9-speed torque converter AT) and FR. The Audi A4 40 TFSI is an EA888-based 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo, 190ps/320Nm. It uses a 7-speed S-tronic (longitudinal DCT) and FWD.
The approaches of the three reveal the engineering philosophy of each brand. BMW maintains displacement to pursue naturally aspirated-like linearity, Mercedes reduces displacement and compensates with electrification, and Audi combines the VW Group's common EA888 platform with the direct feel of a DCT.
When you drive them, the difference in design philosophy becomes the difference in experience
Starting with the late-model C200. The 1.5-liter M264 + BSG engine shows a powerful start that makes you forget the small displacement, as the BSG motor assist kicks in instantly when pulling away. The benefits of this electric assist are significant in city driving, and since the 160Nm of the BSG compensates for the low-speed torque, it feels more powerful than the displacement suggests. However, in the mid-range and especially in the area beyond the BSG's operating range, it returns to being just a 1.5-liter engine. There is a step there.
The engine sound also reveals its 1.5-liter nature, and the pleasure of revving it to high RPMs does not reach the B48. The 9G-TRONIC is smooth, but its direction is different from the sporty shifting crispness of the ZF 8HP, with settings fully dedicated to smoothness and comfort.
The true value of the Mercedes C200 lies not in driving pleasure, but in quality. The body rigidity of the W205 is high, and there are times when the refinement of the ride comfort surpasses the G20. The texture of the interior materials, the operating feel of the switches, and the quietness—the meaning behind Mercedes' claim that 'the C-Class is a small S-Class' is condensed into these aspects. ADAS control is also at a high level, and in terms of long-distance cruising comfort, it rivals or in some situations exceeds the G20.
However, when taken to winding roads, the amount of information from the steering feel is clearly less than that of the 320i. There is also a sense of being high off the ground, and the C200 feels like a car that 'takes you for a ride' rather than one that 'lets you drive.' It is a first-class comfortable transport, but not a car for enjoying a dialogue with the driver.
Personally, I have a fondness for the quality of the C180's engine alone, but in terms of power pickup, it cannot be discussed on the same level as the 320i.
The Audi A4 40 TFSI offers a different answer. The 190ps/320Nm of the EA888 2.0-liter engine has the thickest torque among the three, and the 7-speed S-tronic DCT shows direct and crisp shifting. In terms of acceleration snap alone, the A4 is the sharpest of the three. The weight of the MLB evo platform is about 1,500kg, the lightest of the three, and straight-line stability is high. The build quality of the interior, the operability of the infotainment, and the uniformity of the materials are the true essence of Audi, making it the most 'flawless' finish among the three.
However, the A4 is FWD. And this defines everything. When you turn the steering wheel, the sensation that the front tires are responsible for both driving and steering casts a shadow over the quality of cornering. The sequence of 'the nose enters honestly and the rear follows' that the FR 320i possesses is not present in the A4. When exiting a corner while accelerating, a unique heaviness appears where work is concentrated on the front.
As I wrote in the Golf GTI article, an excellent FWD car persuades the laws of physics. The perfection of the A4 is exactly at that level, and it eliminates the negatives of being FWD to the very limit. However, it has not 'completely' eliminated them. That is likely because the A4's true potential lies in its four-wheel-drive model, the so-called 'quattro'.
The difference between FR and FWD stems from the fundamental design philosophy of the drive system, and it is not a difference that can be bridged by tuning or settings. Because Audi itself knows this, it bestows the higher-grade quattro models with a mechanical full-time 4WD system with a self-locking center differential, providing an option to move away from FWD for the sake of driving. However, in terms of the price tag, it is somewhat unreasonable to consider it a rival to the 320i.
The 'dialogue' that the 320i possesses is unique in this segment
Comparing the three cars, the most clear difference appeared in cornering. On continuous tight corners, frequent acceleration and deceleration, and road joints or undulations, the true nature of the car is mercilessly exposed. The C200 is stable, but there is little road information beyond the steering wheel. The A4 has torque and is stable, but the weight of the FWD lingers in the nose. Only the 320i conveys the contact state of the front tires through the steering, makes you feel the rear following, and returns the sensation that the entire car is moving as one living creature.
What the C200 pursued was 'high-quality movement,' what the A4 pursued was 'flawless versatility,' and what the 320i pursued was 'dialogue with the driver.'
All of them can be said to be sufficiently excellent products.
What you prioritize among them is a matter of personal values, but if the reason for choosing a BMW 3 Series—and a German car in this segment—is 'the joy of driving,' then the 320i sedan provides the most sincere answer.
Chapter 5: Conclusion ── Clear Ranking and the Reasons

1st Place: 320i Sedan ★★★★★
Light, sure, sporty, fun-to-drive. It embodies the essence of BMW most purely and is the only model among the German 3 that prioritizes 'dialogue with the driver' above all else. The 10 years of refinement of the B48, the high rigidity of the CLAR platform, the honesty of the FR layout, and the clean behavior of the sedan body—all of these are present. 12km/L on long trips, 480L of luggage space, and comprehensive ADAS. Its practicality as a second car is also sufficient. The styling is conservative, but as a car you will live with for a long time, this is nothing but a merit. This is my conclusion.
2nd Place: 320d xDrive Touring ★★★☆☆
Practicality is the best among the 4 models. 500L of luggage space + 1,510L with rear seats folded, 400Nm of torque, the stability of xDrive, and the comfort of long-distance ACC. It is the least sporty, but as per the aforementioned hypothesis, the diesel's 'turbo-lag' characteristics are offset to some extent by the heavy body of the Touring, and the 'mismatch' felt in the sedan is accepted as 'power commensurate with a heavy body.' If you choose the 320d xDrive, the Touring is the only choice.
3rd Place: 320d xDrive Sedan ★★☆☆☆
The most half-baked among the 4 models. It lacks the lightness of the 320i sedan and the practicality of the 320d Touring. It is powerful and stable, but the raw handling sought in a BMW FR sedan is distant. How you evaluate stability is one thing, but the reason to dare to choose this would be limited to cases where the three conditions of 'I like diesel,' 'I want AWD,' and 'but I want a sedan' are all met.
4th Place: 320i Touring ★☆☆☆☆
It was the most disappointing. I envisioned an ideal that combined the lightness of the 320i with the practicality of the Touring, but reality was cold. It loses the rigidity of the sedan, the handling becomes ambiguous, and the 1,570kg body cannot be moved lightly with 300Nm of torque. If you want the goodness of the 320i, choose the sedan; if you want practicality, choose the 320d Touring. It is the least BMW-like car, where you can only enjoy the merits of either in a half-baked way.
