Musings of a University Staff Member Living in the Strange Organization Called 'University' | Self-Introduction ✐

Hello! I'm "Suisho," and I work as a staff member at a private university.

I'd like to write about the daily life of a university staff member and things I've felt through my work in a relaxed, casual way—the kind of writing that some readers might find useful.

Profile

Name: Suisho
Age: 30s
Gender: Male
Hobbies: Games (I love the nostalgic ones), Shogi (2-dan), Mahjong (I'm bad at it), Sports (not my forte)

Career as a University Staff Member

I joined the university as a new graduate, and I've reached the age where I'm now considered a mid-level employee.
It's a so-called mammoth school with over 30,000 students, and the name is fairly well-known.

At first, I worked for about five years at the student service counter (the place often called the Academic Affairs Division or Student Affairs Department), which is the easiest role to imagine.
The department I was assigned to was where everyone from freshmen to graduate students came to the counter, so I communicated with and worked for all kinds of students—from those who graduated at the top of their class to unfortunate students who couldn't even use polite language and ended up repeating a year... and sometimes even students involved in entertainment activities.

After that, I transferred to the research department.
Universities are research institutions, you know. It's often forgotten, though.
There, I manage research funds and provide research support while interacting with faculty members who hold titles like professor or associate professor.

With that background, I have interacted so deeply—and sometimes annoyingly so—with "students" and "faculty (researchers)" in addition to "staff," that I am confident I know more about the people in the organization called a university than anyone else.

Also, since I've been assigned to be in charge of DX and operational improvements within my department for a long time, I'm quite knowledgeable about that area as well.

Why I started note

To begin with, what kind of image do you have of the job of a university staff member?

"The work seems easy," "They seem to have a lot of free time," or if you are a student now, "Those guys are useless"...
Aren't there many people who have that impression?

But even for those who were actually university students, the opportunities to interact with staff were surprisingly few, and...
"What is the role of the person sitting in the back...?"
"Don't they have too many people?"
I'm sure many people thought things like that. In other words, everyone doesn't know. What we are doing.

Maybe there are things that only I, who works in the mysterious organization called a "university," can share? That's why I started note!

Universities really have a lot of strange places (and people)...

What kind of note I will write

So, in this note, I plan to write about things like this as they come to mind.

💡 Information that might be useful to someone
・Advice for those aiming to become university staff
・Providing the operational improvement skills I've cultivated
・For colleagues struggling with human relationships
・Things that might be hints for how to work
  …etc

🌿 Random musings (essays) that might not be useful to anyone
・Things I felt while working at the university
・Strange people I met at the university
・Things I think are strange about the university
 ・About my favorite alcohol
・Things I thought of writing as they came to mind...
  …etc

I intend to always attach a 💡 or 🌿 icon to the title, so I would be happy if you read even just the ones you seem interested in!!

Thank you for reading to the end!
I hope this note will be a little hint or a breather for everyone.

I'm still going through trial and error, so if there are any topics you are interested in or themes you want me to dig deeper into, please let me know in the comments.

If you'd like, please follow me.
