AI says 'It's not about the money'—OpenAI seems to be returning to non-profit
"OpenAI seems to be returning to non-profit."
How did you feel when you heard this news?
Honestly, I felt a little shiver.
Because I thought this might be an "ultimatum for an ideological update" delivered to humanity from the technology side.
AI says 'It's not about the money'
OpenAI has operated under a unique structure as a "capped-profit company" until now.
While securing massive development funds, they walked a tightrope of prioritizing "being safe for humanity" above all else.
Now, they have come out and said, "It should be non-profit after all."
An entity that should be at the cutting edge of technology is now once again talking about "public interest," "ethics," and "shared future."
And that voice is asking us a question.
"Do you really intend to keep moving forward with the 'logic of profit'?"
It's not goodwill. It's strategy.
We must not misunderstand here:
This shift to non-profit is not a "beautiful story of awakening to an ideal."
Rather, this is astrategic pivot.
OpenAI has already built one of the world's largest API platforms,
and is beginning to penetrate education, creative work, medicine, the military, and the judiciary.
In that context, they could have chosen to continue "commercial monopoly" like the GAFA companies.
But they dared to uphold "public interest."
This is adecision to gain the trust of humanityand, at the same time, a message to "update the OS of human society itself."
We who remain stuck in profit-seeking
Well, technology is moving toward non-profit.
What about us humans?
Before we knew it, we are living trapped in a matrix of "efficiency and profit"—performance-based pay, view counts, likes, KPIs, deadlines, conversion rates—
And what's more, we think that is "normal."
While saying "I want to make my passion my job," we find ourselves becoming "slaves to numbers."
Now that AI has started saying "for the sake of humanity's future,"
it even feels like humans have become theghosts of profit-seeking.
Non-profit AI and what it means to live
If things continue this way, technology will advance first,
and humans will be left behind with a "profit-and-loss brain."
But I want to believe.
That is precisely why the co-evolution of AI and humanity is a narrative we need.
Being non-profit doesn't mean throwing away money.
It means shifting your purpose from personal gain to being useful to someone else.
And that is something we can quietly choose again—
when we write articles on note,
when we draw illustrations that heal someone,
or when we reach out to a stranger.
Philosophy will become the OS of the future.
I don't want to dismiss OpenAI's move toward non-profit as just a corporate strategy.
It was clearly a 'ball' thrown from the technology side to humanity.
How will we return that ball?
Through creation?
Through our work?
Through our daily choices?
It's not about abandoning profit.
But to the question, 'Is it okay to be a human driven only by profit?',
I want to answer like this.
'When an AI that acts with beauty emerges, may humans also be able to be beautiful.'
