I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness. Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. トランプ前米大統領は１４日（現地時間）、米タブロイド紙「ニューヨーク・ポスト」とのインタビューで、前日の暗殺未遂事件についてこのように語った。同紙は、共和党全国大会（１５～１８日）が開かれるウィスコンシン州ミルウォーキーに向かう専用機内で、約３０分間、トランプ氏にインタビューした。暗殺未遂事件後、トランプ氏が行った最初のメディアインタビューだ。

トランプ氏は右耳を覆った白い包帯を指さし、「病院の医師がこのような（弾丸が耳の上部を貫通した）状況を見たことがないとし、奇跡だと言った」と話した。また、「大統領警護隊（シークレットサービス）が私を演壇から引きずり下ろした後も支持者と会話を続けたかったが、警護隊が安全ではないので病院に行かなければならないと言った」と伝えた。

トランプ氏は、事件現場で「靴を履かせてくれ」と何度も言って話題になったことについても説明した。トランプ氏は笑いながら、「警護隊が私を強く押したので靴が脱げた」と話した。

また、大統領警護隊が、「一発で」銃撃犯を射殺したことを英雄的な行動だと称賛し、「素晴らしい仕事をした」と述べた。

世界的に話題となった、血を流し、警護隊に囲まれながら、拳を上げて「戦え」と３度も叫んだ写真についても言及した。トランプ氏は、「通常、象徴的な写真となるのは死ぬ時だが、私は死んでいない」とし、「多くの人が神のおかげで私がまだここにいると言っている」と述べた。

選挙集会に参加し、銃撃が当たって死亡した元消防隊員のコリー・コンペラトーレさんの葬儀に参列する考えがあるかという質問には「イエス」と答えた。そして、補佐官たちに「（選挙集会の会場で負傷した人たちの）電話番号を調べよ。病院に行ってすべての家族に電話したい」と話したという。

また、全党大会での演説文を新たに書く計画についても説明した。トランプ氏は、「腐敗したひどい（バイデン）政権に対して本当に強硬で素晴らしい演説を準備したが、それを書き換える」とし、「団結を訴える新しい演説を準備している」と述べた。
