Hoshino and Ochiai's Draft Strategy: A Memoir by the Former Chunichi Scouting Director
Hoshino left behind people, while Ochiai left behind results (2023/10/4)
A memoir of the scouting career of Muneo Nakata, who supported the legendary managers Senichi Hoshino and Hiromitsu Ochiai as scouting director.
Looking back carefully year by year at 38 years of drafts, including his time as a junior scout, this book is enjoyable even for non-Chunichi fans. It covers not only the evaluations and behind-the-scenes stories of players drafted by Chunichi, but also touches on why Chunichi did not or could not draft talented players selected by other teams.
As the catchphrase on the book's obi states, 'Mr. Hoshino left behind people, and Mr. Ochiai left behind results.' While Hoshino was a rare manager who aimed for immediate championships while also possessing a GM-like perspective that looked five or ten years into the team's future, Ochiai was a manager who poured everything into winning the current season rather than looking years ahead.
'The future and reality'.
The struggles and conflicts Mr. Nakata faced between these two extremes come through clearly. Since the scouting director reveals the behind-the-scenes details so candidly, this book can also be considered to have high value as a reference for the draft.
