[Learning from Deadmau5] The story of how self-assessment can sometimes be unreliable

Whether it's DJing, track making, or even social media posts like this, we often experience a gap between our self-assessment and how things are actually received.
Deadmau5 shared a valuable experience in a short video.
Do I know if a track will be a hit when I'm making it? No, I don't. In fact, I almost scrapped my biggest hit song. At the time, there was a guy named Harvey Tubman who worked at mau5trap, and he was my tour manager for a while. I made "
Strobe" in a hotel room at the Great Eastern Hotel in England. I brought my laptop and gear, and just kind of made the track. So, I basically packaged that song with five others and brought them to everyone, saying, 'Alright guys, listen to these. Which one is good? What should I do?' I was betting on a different song. But Harvey said, 'I really love Strobe.' I said, 'No, I'm not doing it. It's no good. It doesn't click with me.' When I said, 'The sound is...', he replied, 'Hey, you should release this.' I said, 'No, forget it.' He kept pushing me for months. I literally ran out of options and finally gave in. I said, 'Alright, Harvey.' So we released the song. And then, it became my biggest hit.
That is a very interesting episode.
I believe that having a sense of self and maintaining your own objectivity is extremely important when engaging in creative activities.
However, rather than thinking that is everything, perhaps balancing your own perspective with the perspective of others is what is truly important.
