My Favorite Albums Part 211 [Doom/Sludge Edition]

This is a CD by the first band formed by Matt Pike, formerly of SLEEP and currently of HIGH ON FIRE. (Actually, it is not an album but a compilation containing four tracks from two singles.)

It is more ferocious than SLEEP, and rather than doom, it has stronger crust and punk elements (though it is by no means fast), giving it a sludgecore feel. (I think those who like DYSTOPIA and ACID BATH will definitely like this sound.)

However, the fact that he was in high school when he was in this band is just amazing.

Listening to ASBESTOS DEATH, SLEEP, and HIGH ON FIRE in order of release might be close to torture (laughs), but I think you can feel Matt Pike's musicality, which, despite some changes, has remained fundamentally consistent.

This is just my personal preference, but if you are listening for the first time, I recommend HOLY MOUNTAIN for SLEEP and SURROUNDED BY THIEVES for HIGH ON FIRE. (Though there is no doubt that all their works are must-listens.)

As an aside, if anyone reading this thinks "Oh!", please feel free to look back through my posts if you are interested. I apologize if this sounds arrogant, but you might find some good music or music you didn't know about. My explanations may be clumsy, but I have spent a fair amount of my own money and time on this, and I hope it serves as some small inspiration for the music lives of those reading this.
