English Subject Written Test - Reading Comprehension (Subject) +
The other day, regarding an example of [related material] I found online, I raised an issue not by saying "let's evaluate it together," but rather "what do you think of this recurring 'development'?🙄." It felt very much like "second-hand information"💦
The following example is a more familiar story, a real-life instance involving my own son (when he was in junior high school)📖
It is a simple set of questions, so please try answering them💪
◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆
I will introduce the content right away.
I have intentionally transcribed it line by line and made some partial modifications without changing the main point. For speed, I have added Japanese hints on the right side🙇
《Read the following letter written by Ken to Roy and answer the questions that follow》
Dear Roy,
How are you?
I am busy.
How about you?
I went to Kyoto with my friends last week. *To Kyoto last week
There are many temples and shrines here. *Temples and shrines
I went to Kiyomizu temple, one of the famous temples and Yasaka Shrine. *Famous Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine
Did you go there?
I really enjoyed watching beautiful trees there.
We took some pictures of them. *Taking photos📷
And we went to Kyoto zoo. *Zoo
There were many animals there.
◆Starting the letter suddenly with "I'm busy"🤣
◆Are the capital letters for proper nouns correct?🙄
◆"Have you ever been there?" Since the present perfect tense hasn't been learned yet, I guess it's the past tense (~_~;)
Well, it might be within the acceptable range, but let's overlook the minor "points of concern" that aren't directly related to the test questions🙊
◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆
Now, for the main topic📖
《Write O if the following Japanese sentences match the content, and X if they are incorrect》
① Roy went to Kyoto with his friends
② There are many shrines and temples in Kyoto
③ Ken and his friends went to Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine
④ Ken and his friends went to an aquarium
Now, please provide your answers🙏
◆ ❖ Continuing to the answers ❖ ◆
👇 ☟ 👇 ☟ 👇
①✖ ②○ ③○ ④✖
It's simple, right?☝
For ①, the letter is addressed to Roy, and it was Ken who went, right?

But, is there anyone who feels a bit "stuck" on this?
② Even though he came back from a trip to Kyoto, he uses "here" to state "there are many shrines and temples," so maybe Ken lives in Nara and is referring to his local area as "here"!
⇒ In all other parts, he uses "there" to refer to them😵
So, is ② actually ✖ ??😒
~Is this just splitting hairs? (;^ω^)
Next. My son actually got this wrong.
③ Ken and his friends went to Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine
he marked as "✖"💧
The basis for that judgment☝ --- The subject of the English sentence was "I" so he thought it was wrong.
Your reaction might be, "No, no, it's a story about going together, right?😒"...
But he was careful and actually "read into it" properly☝
◆ At the end of the passage, (in addition to "taking photos,") it is "we" who "went to Kyoto Zoo," and
◆ it is "I" who "went to Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine."
...and so, they are used differently! (Also, it was "I" who enjoyed it.)
And, (while it is easy to imagine this as "group activities" on a school trip,) it is not uncommon to have different itineraries once you arrive at your destination.
◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆
In English reading comprehension questions, you are often asked, "What does the pronoun refer to?" --- Just like that requirement, it is essential to pay deep and careful attention to "what the subject is."
Furthermore, in school tests,
◆ logical answers
are less important than
◆ the skills required to seek out the answers the examiner is looking for ☝🤣
But well, I wonder who they take after 😂
