The Problem of How to Handle the Anxiety of Being Able to Build Websites but Not Being Able to Talk About Attracting Customers [For Aspiring Web Designers]
Hello! I am Aya, who quit my corporate job (March 2023), learned web design from scratch through vocational training (graduated July 2023), and then became a freelance web designer without even looking for a job.
Today, I will talk about something that web designers aiming for 0→1 often find tricky: "What to do when a client asks about attracting customers."
01 Disclosure of My Track Record
*If you are a follower, you have probably seen this enough, so please skip to Chapter 02.
[Status of Attracting Customers Since Opening My Business]
First, I will share the chronological status of how I have attracted customers since graduating from vocational training (end of July 2023).
End of July 2023: Graduated from vocational training
End of November 2023: Opened Instagram
January 2024: First inquiry for website production (Client A) → Submitted business opening notification
March 2024: 2 inquiries for website production via Client A (who introduced my Instagram)
April 2024: 1 inquiry for website production
June 2024: 1 inquiry for website production, 1 for LP production
July 2024: 2 inquiries for website production
August 2024: 1 inquiry for flyer design, 1 for LP production, 1 for website production
September 2024: 1 inquiry for Coconala image production
October 2024: 3 inquiries for website production
All of the above inquiries resulted in contracts.
Looking at this, it seems like a table that would make you wonder if it's even true...
As of November 2024, I have actually completed 8 websites, am currently working on 4 sites simultaneously, and have 5 people waiting.
Writing it like this,
people might think I worked at such a company before,
or that I had studied this once in the past,
or that I was in a favorable position from the start.
That is absolutely not the case!
I really started with no connections and no experience.
I also naturally did "monitor recruitment," which is a path everyone who wants to achieve 0→1 must take.
When I was recruiting monitors, this was what I was most anxious about.
I can build a website, but I can't give advice on attracting customers...
The purpose of building a website is to "attract customers," so is it okay that I can't talk about that...?
This was it.
Because I hadn't achieved 0→1 myself yet, there was no way I could have the experience or knowledge to attract customers.
So, what do you do when a client asks you about attracting customers?
Do you answer that you don't know?
Today, I will share the customer attraction flow for awebsitethat I have been talking about since I was working with monitor clients!
02 What Web Designers Can and Cannot Do
Now, what is it that clients actually expect from us web designers in the first place?
A website with a lot of traffic?
A website that generates inquiries?
A website that conveys a sense of trust?
If you think that we, as creators, must achieve all of the above, you might need to study marketing a bit more.
Actually, "increasing traffic" is something that cannot be achieved just by building a website.
Of course, techniques like properly including words that prospective customers might search for in the title are necessary, but that is the limit.
What we as creators can do is
focus on "how to get as many visitors to the site as possible to click the inquiry button."
It is about optimizing the text structure and design to achieve this.
(This is quite difficult, and I am still studying it myself as well.)
However, clients think that as long as they build a website,Webtraffic will come. They believe that traffic will automatically come from theHPand inquiries will follow.
If you deliver the product in this state, you will later be told that the website had no effect at all. That is something I want to avoid.
03 Clearing up the client's misunderstanding
I make sure to have a solid conversation during the initial meeting about drawing the line between what I can and cannot do.
However, how you convey this is important.
Telling them, "I cannot get involved with traffic numbers!" leaves a very bad impression😅, so I clearly tell them, "A website will not get traffic just by being published. Let's think about the traffic flow after the website is published."
Regarding specific traffic flow, I explain that there are:
・Things that take effort but can be done for free, such as traffic from social media and blog posts
・Things that do not take effort but cost money, such as Google Ads
I explain these options and suggest the recommended method for that person.
※If you do not know about ad operations, be sure to clearly state that it is outside your area of expertise.
I have written this part in an easy-to-understand way in the materials I use for initial meetings, so if you would like to refer to the materials, please read the article here!↓
It is paid, but you can download everything in addition to the meeting materials.
