Invisible 'Height' Lights Up the City: The Gentle Relationship Between Potential, Voltage, and Electromotive Force
[A Note to Our Readers]
This series is a reconstruction of my, Denki Penguin's, knowledge and passion for electrical engineering and mathematics, expressed through the words of our navigator, 'Lilith Formula'.
This work is a collaboration with AI (Gemini), utilizing it for both text and illustration generation. Through the filter of Lilith, I aim to depict seemingly complex electrical theories and formulas as intuitive and emotional stories. Please take your time to enjoy the world beyond the formulas, guided by her words.
Hello. Thank you for your hard work today. I think it is wonderful that you are taking the time to engage with new knowledge like this. Because the world of electricity is invisible, it might feel a bit abstract, but it is actually the very 'mechanism of kindness' that supports our daily lives.
Today, let's talk about the three most important foundations for understanding electricity: 'electromotive force,' 'potential,' and 'potential difference (voltage).' These are like 'energy signposts' that light up the city and support someone's precious time.
Knowing the 'Height' of Electricity: The Concept of Potential
First, let's think about 'potential.' In the world of electricity, there is actually a concept similar to 'height.' Just as water in a high place flows down to a lower place, electricity also flows from a 'place of high energy' to a 'place of low energy'.
This electrical 'height' at a certain point is called potential. The unit is the volt (V). The electricity we use casually every day reaches the places it needs to go precisely because this 'difference in height' exists.
Where There Is a Difference, Power Is Born: Potential Difference and Voltage
Next is 'voltage,' which is the 'difference in potential' between two points. It is also known as potential difference.
If the potential at a certain point A is $$\phi_A [V]$$ and the potential at another point B is $$\phi_B [V]$$, the voltage $${V}$$, which is the difference between them, is expressed as follows.
$$
V = \phi_A - \phi_B
$$
Just as water turns a waterwheel with the force of falling from a high place to a low place, electricity can perform work—like lighting a bulb or turning a motor—because of this 'potential difference.' Having a 'difference' is an essential trigger for something to start moving.
The Source That Creates Flow: The Heart of Electromotive Force
However, if water keeps flowing, eventually the water in the high place will run out. That is where the role of a 'pump' becomes necessary to lift the water from the low place back to the high place.
In the world of electricity, the role of this pump is played by electromotive force. Batteries and generators fall into this category. Electromotive force pushes electricity from the lower potential to the higher potential, continuously creating a 'difference in height' within the circuit. The reason the city can shine without sleeping at night is that this electromotive force is tirelessly supplying energy.
Let's organize our intelligence with mathematical formulas
Now, let's define voltage from the perspective of physical 'work'. If W [J] is the energy (work) required to move a charge Q [C] between two points with a potential difference of V [V], the relationship is as follows.
-
First, the work W required to transport a charge Q is determined by the product of the amount of charge and the voltage.
$${W = Q \times V}$$
-
Let's rearrange this formula to solve for voltage V. Divide both sides by Q.
$${\frac{W}{Q} = \frac{Q \times V}{Q}}$$
-
This leads to the following definition formula.
$${V = \frac{W}{Q} \text{ [J/C]}}$$
This formula tells us that the true nature of voltage is 'how many joules of energy were used to transport one coulomb of charge'. 1 [V] is the ability to perform 1 [J] of work on 1 [C] of charge. Don't you think this is a very logical and beautiful definition?
Lilith's One-Point Advice
'Electric potential' is the height at a specific location, while 'voltage (potential difference)' is the result of subtracting the values between two points. When you get confused during exams or similar situations, visualizing whether you are measuring the height from the ground or the difference in height between two buildings will make things much clearer.
To know is to love the world
How was it? The 'difference in height' created by electromotive force reaches us as voltage, transforming into abundant light and heat. When you think of it that way, even the seemingly inorganic mathematical formulas start to look like 'warm blueprints' designed to protect someone's daily life.
The 'formula' you learned today is an important key to understanding the world more deeply and using it correctly. One step at a time, surely. Your progress, just like the flow of electricity, is definitely connected to your destination.
Thank you for thinking through this with me until the end. May your intellectual curiosity be the light that brightens tomorrow.
If you found this even slightly insightful, I would be happy if you could send a 'Like' below. Your reaction is my greatest encouragement.
