▶ Script Editor 'Tellastry' Released for Free: A Japanese Move Against Hollywood's 95% Market Share [8/14]

On August 5, ROBOT Communications Inc. (Shibuya, Tokyo) released a free beta version of 'Tellastry,' a dedicated script editor developed by its in-house story production team, 'Monogatari Lab.'


The editor is characterized by its ability to replicate the script formats widely used in the Japanese film and drama industry, allowing users to write manuscripts directly.
The development was a collaboration with Photron Limited, and the tool can be used by registering as a user on the official website.
Note that the only supported browser is Google Chrome, and its 'Windows/Mac compatibility' is due to it being browser-based.
Data cannot be saved while offline, and the service states that it will provide 30 days' notice via email in the event of service termination.
In Japanese scripts, a unique style consisting of 'scene headings, action lines, and dialogue' has become established as a standard industry practice, but options for dedicated tools to replicate this on a PC have been limited.
Tools that have actually been used include the paid Windows-only editor 'O's Editor2,' the free 'VerticalEditor,' and custom templates created using the indentation features of Ichitaro.
The small market size, the fact that scripts have traditionally been printed and distributed as paper manuscripts, and that the formatting is an implicit convention rather than a codified standard are considered the reasons why dedicated software has struggled to grow commercially.
In contrast, in the United States, Final Draft, founded in 1990, has established itself as the de facto standard.
The company has been the top seller for over 30 years and claims that it is used in 95% of Hollywood productions (figures provided by the vendor itself).

The price is $199 (approximately 31,000 yen, calculated at 158 yen to the dollar), and in recent years, competitors such as WriterDuet and Celtx have also emerged.
While the U.S. popularized both the format and the tools together, in Japan, only the format remained as a convention, leaving the implementation side vacant for a long time.
It is worth noting that the entity behind this development is not a software company, but a team of screenwriters within a production company.
The development staff includes film director Norihiro Koizumi and two others, meaning the people who write scripts daily are involved in the design.
The official website features a message explaining that they decided to build it themselves because a satisfactory script editor never seemed to appear.
Additionally, both ROBOT and Photron are under the IMAGICA GROUP umbrella, making this project a collaboration within the group.

My honest reaction is, 'It's about time!'
In fact, I find it strange that this didn't exist until now.
The format for Japanese screenplays has functioned for decades as a common language that everyone in the industry can read.
Yet, the only thing missing was a tool that allowed us to write it naturally on a PC.
We have been left in a strange situation for a long time where the format existed, but the implementation did not.
Moreover, the people who created this are not a software company, but the very people who write screenplays every day.
A tool designed by those who know the inconveniences best is bound to be strong.
I also appreciate the approach of releasing it as a free beta first to grow it while listening to feedback from the field.
It is far faster than trying to convince people with a finished product.
With that said, I would like to point out some exciting challenges for the future.
Overseas screenplay software is equipped with revision management (a system that color-codes and distributes changes between drafts) and export functions for production management software.
This is because a screenplay is not just something to be read, but also the source data for call sheets (shooting schedules) and budgets.
I believe that narrowing down the features at first was the right decision for an entry point.
Moving forward, I see the turning points being the price when it becomes a paid service, data compatibility with other tools, and whether screenwriting schools adopt it for their classes.
And there is one more thing that cannot be avoided: AI.
It has now become standard for writing interfaces to have an AI button.
Microsoft Word has Copilot, Google Docs has Gemini, Notion has generative features, and even blog editing screens will open a side window to continue writing if you select text.
I believe how Tellastory approaches this in the future is a point worth watching.
However, I would not recommend that Tellastory add an AI button to its screenplay editor.
There are three reasons for this.
First, the value of a screenwriter lies not in the speed of writing, but in the judgment of what to choose.
An environment where a machine suggests the next line could quietly dull that judgment.
Second, there is the issue of rights.
A structure where a manuscript in progress is sent to an external AI is not compatible with production environments that value the confidentiality of projects.
Tellastory explicitly states on its official website that it does not view users' manuscript data without permission.
AI features would easily diminish the weight of that statement.
Third, the main selling point of this work is its 'stripped-down, streamlined design.'
The moment you add trendy features, it contradicts that promise.
The greatest function of a tool for writing is not to get in the way of writing.
The Japanese film industry has finally reached the starting line.
