The Necessity of Deciding What Not to Do
The Power of "Prioritization" to Change Your Life
What is the difference between successful people and those who are not?
Many people envision an ideal life, but there are those who can achieve it and those who cannot. One of the decisive differences is the power to prioritize.
Having an ideal is not enough
We have ideals such as "I want to quit my current job and earn a free income," "I want to make my passion my job," or "I want time to travel abroad." However, many people are busy handling the work right in front of them, and before they know it, time has just passed by.
On the other hand, successful people are different. They enjoy their work like a game while also gaining social influence. Why does such a gap arise? It is because of whether or not they have clearly defined their priorities.
We have been educated "not to prioritize"
There is a reason why many people cannot prioritize and are swept away by the tasks right in front of them. It is because society demands "people who do not prioritize".
People who faithfully do what they are told are convenient for an organization. However, if you are thinking about personal success, you need to focus on what is truly important to you.
First, decide "what not to do"
The first step in setting priorities is deciding "what not to do".
Many successful people hold the belief that "true successful people say no to almost everything."
When setting priorities, you can create a major change by first stopping the following three things.
1. Re-evaluate your connections with friends
When aiming for success, people around you may unconsciously hold you back. In particular, people called "dream killers" will deny your challenges, saying, "That's impossible."
Truly important friends will support your success. If they don't, it is important to keep your distance.
For example, is there a friend who says, "That won't last" or "You'd better not do it" when you try to start a side business? They are trying to keep you in your current environment without any malice.
However, when you want to change something, it is important to break out of that environment.Just by organizing your social media friend list for one year and consciously choosing who you meet, your way of thinking should change significantly.
2. Avoid cheap dopamine
Things that bring temporary pleasure, such as social media, alcohol, cigarettes, games, and junk food, keep success at a distance.
The human brain loses its drive to act when it feels satisfied. To focus on what you truly want to achieve, let's review these habits.
For instance, have you ever had the experience of scrolling for an hour after mindlessly opening social media? If you could use that hour to learn a new skill, you would be a completely different person in a year.
At first, even just deciding to "limit social media use to 30 minutes a day" can be effective.
3. Review communities you continue to participate in out of inertia
Driven by the anxiety that you "must do something," you tend to join communities and events, but to succeed, "solitary time" is also necessary.
For example, have you made it a habit to attend drinking parties or online salons that gather every weekend without any particular purpose? By simply using that time to focus on what you truly want to learn, significant changes will appear in half a year.
The important thing is to periodically ask yourself, "Is this community truly necessary for my growth?"
So, what should you focus on?
When deciding on priorities, the following steps are recommended.
Write down 10 goals
Choose 5 from among them
Furthermore, focus on the 1 most important one
For example, if you want to succeed in a side business,
Social media management
Blog writing
Video production
Skill improvement in your main job
Reading
If you choose these five, and as an example, decide to "put all your effort into blog writing", you won't have to divide your time among other things, making it easier to achieve results.
Summary: Action guidelines for success
✅ Decide "what not to do" rather than "what to do"
✅ Reduce unnecessary relationships
✅ Avoid cheap dopamine (SNS, alcohol, games, etc.)
✅ Re-evaluate communities you continue out of inertia
✅ Narrow your focus to one goal and commit to it fully
Success is not complicated; it comes down to "focusing on what you should do and continuing to do it."
As the first step to changing your life, try deciding what you will not do starting today and set your priorities.
