The Back That Continues to Evolve Toward Tomorrow
Good morning. This morning, the sound echoing through the room is the pleasant clicking of a calculator. Having just graduated from junior high school and celebrated the major milestone of passing high school entrance exams, that child is now beginning a new challenge right before my eyes.
Starting today, a mere 10-day 'bookkeeping boot camp.' That child chose, of their own volition, to spend 10 hours every day in such an intense pursuit—a schedule that would leave even an adult breathless.
The world of bookkeeping is a formidable place, one that can rebuff even university students and adults. Yet, that child, who hasn't even slipped their arms into their new uniform yet, is taking it on with steady eyes. Watching that earnest back, I feel a warmth deep in my chest.
Yesterday, I got the date for my hospital appointment wrong. While grappling with my own clumsiness, watching that child 'evolve' moment by moment before me makes even an imperfect daily life feel strangely endearing.
With every journal entry they solve, that child's world expands more and more. Rather than tracing the 'correct answers' taught by someone else, they are calculating and carving out their own future with their own hands. I believe that this strength will become the reliable power that supports them in the vast seas they will encounter from here on out.
I brew two cups of 300-yen coffee and share this quiet time of struggle. Deeper than any words of 'good luck,' I simply want to continue watching over this evolution with a heart as calm as a lull.
May these 10 days leading toward tomorrow become an irreplaceable treasure for that child, and for me as I watch over them.
