[Designer's Commentary] Making a difference from your 40s. The difference between a "frumpy silhouette" and a "favorable impression silhouette"
Nice to meet you. I'm Kawashima, a designer.
In the previous article, I explained "why clothes stop looking good on you from your 40s," and the theme of this article is the sequel to that: "The story of silhouettes".
When looking at the fashion of men in their 40s and 50s,
"This person has a youthful and wonderful vibe."
"They look somewhat aged..."
──Most of this difference is determined not by sense, but by "how you draw the lines = silhouette".
And this can be improved regardless of your body type.
Today, from a professional designer's perspective, I have summarized
the decisive difference between "shapes that make you look old" and "shapes that give a favorable impression"
as simply as possible.
1 | Personal experience: The old man at the Italian gelato shop

First, from my own experience.
When I was working with a famous Italian brand,
I couldn't forget an old man at a gelato shop in Florence.
He was short and had a potbelly.
Looking only at his body type, he would likely be called an "old man body type" in Japan.
But he was truly stylish.
The reason was just one thing.
He chose a silhouette that perfectly matched his own roundness.
His shirt was appropriately loose,
and his pants were tapered, narrowing naturally.
And there was a "lightness" to the whole look.
Added to that was a smiling face,
making him look like a very elegant and charming old man.
I realized it painfully at that moment.
"Whether something looks good on you is determined by the silhouette, not the body type."
This is common in every country.
2 | What is a frumpy silhouette? "Round x Tight x Heavy"

The reason why men over 40 look old is,
in fact, not the body type itself.
It is simply that "the clothes have not been updated to match those body changes."
Specifically, these are the three elements of looking old.
● 1. Clothes are too straight for the curves of your body
Slim pants you've worn since you were young.
T-shirts that are tight and fit perfectly at the shoulders.
The curves of a 40-year-old's body (chest, stomach, hips) don't mesh with straight-cut clothes, leading to
“tight → looks uncomfortable → looks aged”
.
● 2. The center of gravity drops, but clothes still emphasize the upper body
After 40, your center of gravity naturally shifts to
the area around your stomach
, so wearing clothes that draw the eye to your upper body throws off your balance.
Examples:
・Large logos on the chest
・Jackets that are too tight at the shoulders
・Tight-fitting tops
As a result, you look visually 'heavy'.
● 3. The overall look appears 'heavy and boxy'
For example...
・Pants that are too straight
・Tops that are too long
・Wide silhouette × wide silhouette
This combination creates a square box-like shape, making you look 5 years older and heavier.
3 | The secret to a good impression silhouette is 'Vertical × Negative Space × Lightness'

Men in their 40s who look 'youthful' are, without exception, skilled at
'drawing lines'.
And these are the three elements that create a good impression.
● 1. An 'I-line' that flows straight vertically
What suits you best after 40 is a shape that is
'loose vertically and has a little room horizontally'.
・T-shirts should have 'room in the body width' rather than just shoulder width
・Pants should be slightly tapered
・Jackets should focus on the 'shoulder-to-chest line' rather than the waist
When this 'vertical line' is balanced, you instantly get a
sharp look = good impression.
● 2. Don't 'erase' the curves of your body, 'blend' them
The important thing is not to hide them, but to
choose lines that go well with your curves.
・Round body × clothes that are too tight → looks aged
・Round body × moderate room → youthful
In your 40s, the appeal comes not from "subtractive thinness," but from
"elegant negative space."
● 3. Lighten the materials to create a sense of ease
Heavy materials emphasize a low center of gravity.
・Thick denim → Lighter denim
・Stiff jacket → Softer materials
・Chunky sneakers → Slightly lighter ones
Lightness is youthfulness itself.
4 | How to create a "favorable impression silhouette" starting tomorrow

Here are the three most effective tips you can try starting today.
① Use "width of the torso" as the standard for tops
・Shoulders just right
・Chest tight
Instead of these,
create 2-4cm of space in the torso width.
This alone creates "visual breathing room."
② For pants, the tapered cut is the only choice—neither too thin nor too thick
The optimal solution for men in their 40s is
"a line that narrows toward the ankle."
・Straight → Looks boxy and aged
・Skinny → Doesn't match your age and looks forced
Tapered pants show off the "vertical line" most beautifully.
③ Lighten the overall look
・Heavy materials → Light materials
・Thick → Thin
・Chunky → Sleek
With just this,
your overall impression will look youthful and polished.
5 | Summary: In your 40s, you can change your appearance just by "refining the lines"
To summarize the points from this article...
■ Maturing silhouette
・Round × Stiff × Heavy
・Clothes that are too straight
・Center of gravity balance is off
■ Good impression silhouette
・I-line that flows vertically
・Has negative space
・Lightweight materials
In other words, for those in their 40s and 50s
'Youthfulness is determined not by "thinness" but by "how you handle lines"'
Body type doesn't matter.
As long as you choose the right silhouette, anyone can change to a "good impression."
