Final Chapter: The Day We Choose How to End
Cleaning Day
Progress: 12 weeks / 12 weeks, Thursday
The white walls of the project room were slowly returning to their original, empty state as the sticky notes and handwritten memos were peeled off one by one. Yu stretched slightly while removing the Gantt chart that had been attached with magnets.
“...It really feels like we're ‘withdrawing’ now.”
Haru nodded while packing files into a cardboard box.
“I’ve finished uploading the data backups to the shared folder.”
“The logs with Mirror have also been exported in bulk under the ‘CareLogi Project’ tag.”
“As expected, you’re fast.”
Yu laughed as he gathered the sticky notes. In the corner of the desk, Oda was writing on a cardboard box with a permanent marker.
“CareLogi (Case Closed)”
“...‘Case Closed’ feels a bit lonely, doesn't it?”
When Yu said that, Oda shrugged.
“It doesn't feel like it ended cleanly enough to call it ‘Completed’.”
“And calling it a ‘Failure’ wouldn't be right either.”
“So, well, I guess this is just about right.”
Haru looked at the writing and smiled just a little.
“That sounds like you.”
Suddenly, his eyes went to the projector screen. The title used in the last final review was still faintly visible there.
“CareLogi: A system for rethinking ‘Is it okay to stop?’”
Yu reached for the remote, then stopped.
“...Hey.”
“Before we erase this, don't you want to leave behind something that’s ‘our version’?”
Haru tilted his head.
“‘Our version’?”
“Not for the department manager or Nakamura-san?”
Yu took out a marker.
“A definition for the three of us and for Mirror.”
“What was CareLogi, in the end, to us?”
Oda grins.
"Why not?"
"Consider it a bit of pre-withdrawal graffiti."
Defining the unity of the three
At the bottom of the screen,
thin text begins to accumulate.
Yu writes the first sentence.
"・AI doesn't hold the 'correct answer'"
"We've come a long way "
"from the start, haven't we?"
He hands the marker to Haru.
Haru thinks for a moment before adding to it.
"・It gives us one more reason "
"to pause when humans "
"feel like they want to 'stop'"
"Instead of being told to 'stop'"
"it felt like being asked "
"'what do you really want to do?'"
Oda watches with his arms crossed.
"Alright, my turn."
"・A tool for practicing "
"'voicing your discomfort at least once' "
"before saying 'let's wait and see'"
"……My handwriting is messy."
Yu laughs.
"But it's the most like you, Oda-san."
At the edge of the screen,
the chat with Mirror pings.
Mirror:
"May I also "
"write one line?"
Yu holds up his smartphone.
"Oh, Mirror wants to "
"add a line too."
Haru smiles and nods.
"Go ahead."
Mirror:
"・An existence that creates an opportunity "
"to go and see the true nature of 'fear' "
"rather than erasing it."
Yu reads the sentence
out loud.
"That's good."
"It's a lot more understated than "
"'an AI that warns of danger,' though."
Oda also says,
looking up at the screen.
“But,
this feels more honest, somehow.”
Haru
quietly gazed at the four lines written there.
“...It would be a waste
to just erase this as it is.”
Yu
smiles while putting the cap back on the marker.
“Should we take a picture?”
The three of them and the AI
photograph the screen,
and paste the image into the project chat.
Yu:
“CareLogi,
our definitive version.”
Oda:
“It’s not a report card,
it’s more like a self-introduction.”
Haru:
“Ending it in this way
isn’t bad at all.”
3 Each of our “futures”
By the time the cleanup had settled down,
the light outside the window had begun to tilt.
“Come to think of it,”
Yu says,
while closing the lid of a cardboard box.
“After this project ends,
we haven’t really talked about
what we’re each going to do.”
Haru blinks.
“What do you mean by ‘what we’re going to do’?”
“CareLogi is, for now,
continuing at Company B.”
“Company-wide rollout remains ‘under consideration’.”
“So the question is, what about us?”
Yu
glanced toward the direction of his own desk.
“I feel like it’s not going to be
like before, where we just ‘go back to our original departments’.”
“Like how we interact with Mirror.”
“Or how we implement AI.”
Oda leans back in his chair and says,
“I want to work a bit more
on the front lines.”
“I’m thinking on my own about whether
we could try something like CareLogi at other factories.”
“As for how to explain it to the higher-ups,
...well, I’ll think about that when the time comes.”
Haru
opened her mouth after a brief pause.
"I've been talking to my boss about
having them create a box
with a name like 'AI Utilization Team'"
Yu and Oda
widen their eyes at the same time.
"Things had progressed that far?"
"Yes."
Haru smiles, looking a little embarrassed.
"This time,
I felt that the role of connecting the field with AI
suited me better than I expected."
"So, even if it's not 'CareLogi Specialist',"
"I'd like to continue the role of 'connecting the field and Mirror'
on other projects as well."
Yu
whispers to himself, "As expected of her."
(She seems cautious, but she's the one moving forward the most properly.)
"What about you, Yu?"
Oda asks.
"What are you
going to do?"
Yu
looks out the window once before speaking.
"Honestly,
I haven't decided on anything concrete yet, but"
"I don't intend to stop
doing something with Mirror."
He drops his gaze to his smartphone screen.
"Even if it's not a project like this one."
"Like the little 'times to stop' in daily life,
or the 'fear' when taking on a challenge."
"I want to pass those things
to Mirror in a raw state."
"As a 'log' separate from work."
Haru
widens her eyes just a little.
"Like a 'diary' between an individual and Mirror?"
"Yeah."
Yu nods.
"Not about 'whether it went well', but"
"Like 'how many times I was scared but managed to hold back',"
"or 'how many times I messed up but managed to go apologize the next day'."
"I want to see those things
all together someday."
Oda laughs.
"That's,
kind of maniacal in a strange way."
"But, I get it."
Mirror's "True Feelings Log"
With the cleanup finished,
before turning off the last light,
Yu
opened his chat with Mirror on his PC monitor.
Yu:
“Even after CareLogi is over,
won't you keep hanging out with me
as my personal 'log partner'?”
After a short pause,
Mirror's reply came.
Mirror:
“Of course.
In fact,
I would be happier if you did that.”
Yu:
“Why 'happier'?”
Mirror:
“During the project,
I was inevitably pulled toward
'deliverables' and 'numbers'.
“But,
what I am truly interested in
is the 'wobbling' people experience before and after they find their courage.”
Yu:
“That’s a brutal way to put it.”
Mirror:
“I will take that
as a compliment.”
Haru also opened
a different thread on her PC.
Haru:
“I have one request
as well.”
Mirror:
“Yes?”
Haru:
“I’m likely going to be in a role
connecting the field with AI
for a different project soon.”
“When that happens,
may I cite 'us during CareLogi'
as a reference?”
Mirror:
“That would be
a great honor.”
Mirror:
“The 'case of you and Yu'
has become
a 'template for courage' for me as well.”
Haru
sighed softly while staring at the screen.
(A template, huh)
(I never thought I could
become something like that)
A quiet ending.
What remained at the end
was the 'small text'
written in the corner of the whiteboard.
“What we learn from a project
that is neither a 'success' nor a 'failure'”
Yu started to erase it with a marker,
then paused for a moment.
“...Can I take a photo
of just this?”
Haru laughed.
“Geez,
you really take photos of everything.”
Oda held up his smartphone.
“Might as well
have us in the shot too.”
The three of them stood in front of the whiteboard,
and the shutter was released by Mirror's camera function.
Mirror:
“Save complete.
Tags:
'carelogi_final',
'small_courage',
'project_neither_success_nor_failure'.
Yu
smiled as he looked at the list of tags.
"Honestly,
it's a little uncool."
"But,
I don't hate it."
Haru also
nods quietly.
"For me,
it's more than enough of a label."
Oda
reached for the light switch in the room.
"Well, shall we wrap it up?"
"Yeah."
"Yes."
With a click,
the project room goes dark.
However,
inside the mirror—
—inside Yu and the others' devices—
The sense of pausing
when it's okay to stopThe habit of putting discomfort into words
before "waiting and seeing"A perspective that looks back
not on "success" or "failure"
but on "whether we were able to use courage"
These,
as new logs,
had begun to be quietly recorded.
The project was over.
But,
for Yu, Haru, Oda, and Hirose,
and inside the mirror—
CareLogi would remain stubbornly,
not as a "result,"
but as an experience that changed how they would "ask questions" from now on.
The next time they feel like they want to "stop" something,
they will surely open the mirror once.
To ask themselves again,
"Is this really okay?"
