The Magic of Music Production: Never Allow Dissonance. Perfectly Tune the 'Scale' of Your Space

Introduction

Hello, I am Crontis. The "Chroma" I am introducing todayis the world's first chromatic reverb, with a design philosophy 180 degrees different from any conventional reverb plugin. It is a "chromatic reverb".

In standard reverbs, no matter how beautifully they spread, the complex entanglement of internal delay components meant there were always moments where specific frequencies would clash, inevitably causing the space to become "muddy" (dissonant). However, Chroma individually analyzes and controls the energy of the "12 semitones (C, C#, D...)" contained within the reverberation in real-time. Because it can beautifully resonate "only" the reverberation of scales that perfectly match the key (tonality) of the track, while coldly stripping away the reverberation of out-of-key notes, it enables a magical spatial expression where the mix never becomes muddy by even a millimeter, no matter how deep the reverb is applied.

1. What is Xynth Audio Chroma?

It is a next-generation intelligent reverb plugin that detects the pitch (scale) of the input audio signal and generates and amplifies only perfectly tuned, harmonic reverberation components.

• Intuitive Chromatic Wheel (Circular Editor):

  • A 12-semitone meter is placed in the center of the screen, allowing you to manually specify which notes (scales) you want to resonate as reverb by turning them ON/OFF or adjusting their intensity directly to match the key of your track.

• Main Controls:

  • Decay: Controls the time it takes for the reverb to fade away. With Chroma, even if set to a long duration, the sound becomes a sublime lingering tone like a "beautiful synth pad" because the audio is tuned.

  • Tone / Filter: Adjusts the brightness of the reverb. You can create a crystal shine by emphasizing the high frequencies, or build a heavy wall of air by focusing on the low frequencies.

  • Pitch Shifter (Built-in): Shifts the pitch of the reverb component up or down by one octave, allowing you to layer a magnificent shimmer effect behind the original sound.

Xynth Audio Chroma Parameter Explanation

1. COLOR (Bottom left knob)

• Role: The main knob that adjusts the overall "application amount" of the effect and the "intensity" at which the pitch adheres to the scale.

• Effect:

  • The further you turn it to the right, the more all dissonance and irrelevant frequencies in the input sound are stripped away, and the pitch is forcibly shifted to the clean scale of the specified scale (the notes on the illuminated keyboard).

  • When set near the maximum, it imparts a metallic, crystalline, and beautiful digital resonance unique to this plugin.

2. KEY SELECT (Middle center menu)

This is the most important musical section for defining which scale the audio will be locked to.

• ROOT NOTE: Specifies the root note (C to B) that serves as the basis for the track.

• SCALE: Selects the scale to lock to (NATURAL, PENTATONIC, PHRYGIAN DOMINANT, etc.), and also switches between minor (min) and major (maj).

• Keyboard Visual: The notes included in the set scale are visualized in real-time with purple lighting on the mini-keyboard at the bottom.

3. SPCTRL (Middle right button)

This is a hidden menu for diving deeper into the behavior of spectral (frequency) processing.

• MORPH / AMOUNT: Adjusts the smoothness of morphing when the pitch changes and the depth of spectral modulation.

• GATE: Cuts subtle harmonic noise below a certain volume level, making the locked sound cleaner and more clearly defined.

4. HIGH QUALITY (Bottom right toggle switch)

• Role: A switch that raises the internal spectral analysis resolution (such as FFT size 1024) to high-precision mode.

• Effect: Turning it on makes audio separation overwhelmingly clear, but it introduces processing delay (latency). If you leave it off (as shown in the image: 0 LATENCY), you can perform in real-time or work smoothly with zero delay.

💡 Creative Usage Tips

• Turn simple rain sounds or ambient noise into ethereal chord pads: Load 'non-musical noise' such as rain hitting an umbrella, city bustle, or ocean waves into a track and insert this Chroma. Raise the COLOR knob significantly to 70-90% to match the key of your song (e.g., D# min as in the third image). From within the noise, an organic and ethereal ambient pad will emerge, as if a celestial synthesizer is playing chords.

• Turn boring synth leads into futuristic cyber-glitches: For a standard synth lead, intentionally set a special scale (like PHRYGIAN DOMINANT) that is slightly off from the song's key using KEY SELECT. By aggressively automating the COLOR knob up and down, you can create eerie and beautiful digital pitch bounces (spectral glitch effects) between phrases, instantly elevating the modernity of the track.

2. Chroma Hack Techniques to Awaken Your Track into a 'Cutting-Edge Cyber Space'

① Greatly expand 'Future Bounce' chord synths to be 120% cleaner

When you apply deep reverb to a super saw (wall of synths) that repeats intense chord changes, the reverberation of the previous chord remains the moment the chord changes, causing dissonance and blurring the overall sharpness.

• Settings: Insert into the chord bus, and use the wheel to select the song's scale (e.g., only white keys for C Major). Set the Decay to a longer duration.

• Effect: No matter how fast the chords switch, the unnecessary lingering resonance of the previous chord is smoothly filtered into a 'harmonious scale' before it can clash with the current chord. This achieves a modern sound that combines overwhelming width with a crystal-clear transparency devoid of any muddiness.

② Carving 'Beautiful Melodic Reverberation' out of Drum Kicks and Percussion

For when you want to layer a mystical 'tone' that is perfectly synchronized with the song's key onto a kick drum that is just a 'thud' without a scale, or onto metallic percussion hits.

• Result: Insert into the percussion track and fix the wheel pinpoint-accurate to the song's root note. Set the Mix to around 30%.

• Effect: The moment the percussion is struck, a beautiful bell-like resonance—perfectly harmonized with the song's key—or a futuristic laser-like reverb follows from behind. The cybernetic feel of the entire beat explodes upward.

③ Dressing Vocal Chops in 'Celestial Shimmer Ambient'

For when you want to give finely cut vocal phrases (chops) a grand, cinematic aura, as if a choir of angels is singing in the background.

• Settings: Set the built-in pitch shift to '+12 semitones (1 octave up)' and increase the Decay to a longer setting.

• Effect: The moment the singing starts, a perfectly tuned, one-octave-up shimmer reverb dominates the space, as if light is pouring down from far above the speakers. The quality of the track is instantly elevated to the level of top international professionals.

3. Practice in FL Studio: OS-specific, 0.1% Precision Tuning Management

Since the 'selection (ON/OFF)' of the reverberation scale in Chroma determines 100% of the song's quality, strict editing on a per-note basis is essential while calmly following the signals on the mixer with your ears.

Operations to fine-tune the intensity (sensitivity) of each note on the central chromatic wheel and find the 'delicious, razor-thin boundary where no dissonance occurs' at the moment chords transition:

When returning all wheel settings to flat (normal reverb state where all scales resonate uniformly) and AB testing how cleanly the 'gaps' in the mix have changed due to Chroma's tuning system:

• Mac: Option + Left Click (*The winning formula to dynamically awaken the listener's brain is to automate the Chroma Mix to jump to '100%' for just one beat right before the drop (the end of the build-up) on the FL Studio playlist, move the built-in pitch shift aggressively to distort the space cybernetically, and then have the full-volume, completely dry (zero reverb) kick drum pop at the start of the drop.)

1. Before applying Chroma: A bass that is ferocious yet inorganic, mixed with intense dissonance

The 'metallic raspy voice (harmonics)' characteristic of undulating Growl and Wobble sounds is running wild, ignoring the key (scale) of the track. While it has plenty of power and aggression, when layered with melodic synths that have a chordal feel, the dissonance in the mid-to-high frequencies clashes, crowding the mix as mere 'flashy noise.' It ends up undermining the beauty of the entire track.

2. After applying Xynth Audio Chroma

The destructive power of the heavy bass remains intact, but it has awakened into a super-high-purity brilliance (Colouring) like a laser cutting through the night sky! The components of the ferocious metallic sound in the bass are instantly and perfectly 100% tuned to the key (scale) of the track. No matter how wildly you move the filters, all the generated harmonics are converted into beautiful chordal glitter, sticking perfectly to the synth's chord progression down to the millimeter. While completely eliminating muddy dissonance, it has evolved into a supreme Colour Bass sound that combines overwhelming sound pressure with a modern, cyber-like sparkle as if crystals were shattering.
