The Magic of Music Production: Stripping Away Frequencies to Carve Out the 'Star' of the Sound

Hello, I'm Crontis. The 'kHs Filter' I'm introducing today might look like an ordinary filter you see everywhere at first glance. However, this is actually the plugin I open most frequently in my mix and sound design sessions.
In music production, 'subtraction' is far more important than addition. This filter clears up muddiness in sound in seconds with its ultra-lightweight operation, and by moving the knob, it instantly imbues your tracks with the dramatic 'swell' characteristic of club music. Its refined UI, which has stripped away all waste, connects our intuition directly to the sound.
1. What is kHs Filter?
It is an ultra-lightweight, high-quality filter plugin that features four classic filter modes, allowing you to freely control the character of your sound with smooth cutoff control and powerful resonance.

4 Filter Modes (Type):
Low Pass: Cuts the high frequencies and leaves only the low frequencies. This is the most frequently used mode, where the sound gradually becomes muffled.
High Pass: Cuts the low frequencies sharply, leaving only the sparkling high-frequency components.
Band Pass: Leaves only a specific frequency band in a 'tube-like' shape, cutting both the high and low frequencies around it. It is perfect for effects like radio voices.
Notch: Targets and eliminates only a specific pinpoint frequency.

Main Controls:
Cutoff: Determines the frequency at the boundary where the filter operates.
Resonance: Sharply amplifies the band just before the boundary (Cutoff point), adding intense character and presence to the sound.
kiloHearts Filter Parameter Explanation

1. Filter Type Selection (Middle Icons)
Select the shape (curve) to cut from 7 types with a single click.
Low Pass (Far left: Selected): Cuts frequencies higher than the set frequency, resulting in a muffled sound.
Band Pass / High Pass / Notch / Peak / Low Shelf / High Shelf: Depending on your needs, you can leave only specific bands or conversely carve out pinpoint areas (notch).
2. Main Control (Lower knobs)
Cutoff: Sets the base frequency where the filter operates. You can also move the curve directly by dragging it within the center window.
Q: Adjusts the 'sharpness (resonance)' near the cutoff frequency. Turning it to the right and raising it too much creates a unique 'ringing' character (oscillation), allowing for dramatic mixing effects similar to a synthesizer.
Gain: Adjusts how much to boost/cut the band when a shelf or peak type filter is selected (disabled for Low Pass, etc.).
3. Filter slope (Bottom row: Filter slope)
Role: Sets the 'steepness (slope)' of the wall when blocking sound (e.g., x1, x2, x4).
Effect: The higher the multiplier (e.g., x4), the sharper the cutoff from the cutoff point, which is effective when you want to completely block unnecessary bands.
💡 Creative Applications
DJ-style Low Pass Automation: Select Low Pass and set the Filter slope to x2 or x4. With Q turned slightly to the right to add character, opening the Cutoff from bottom to top (turning the knob to the right) toward the build-up of the track (before the chorus) can create a dramatic progression as if the floor is gradually opening up.
Clean cut of unnecessary sub-bass (ultra-low frequencies): Select High Pass and set the Cutoff to around 20-30Hz. By keeping the Filter slope high, you can instantly and perfectly eliminate 'unnecessary air vibrations (low-end muddiness)' that are inaudible to the human ear but drain speaker power, making it easier to gain overall mix volume.
2. Filtering techniques to eliminate track 'muddiness' and create progression
① Quickly cleaning up the 'muddy low-end' of backing tracks
When synth pads or acoustic guitars are encroaching on the territory of the main kick or sub-bass, causing the low-mid range to become muddy.
Setting: Set the mode to 'High Pass' and boldly turn the Cutoff to the right up to around 150Hz-200Hz, where it won't interfere with the bassline.
Effect: It may feel a bit lighter when listening to the track alone, but the moment you listen to the entire mix (ensemble), the low-end muddiness disappears, creating 'professional space' where the kick's punch stands out many times more.
② Creating extreme tension in 'Future Bounce' build-ups
When you want to narrow the world every bar just before the chorus (drop) to make the subsequent explosion stand out even more.
Result: Insert it into the bus containing the main chords or lead synth and set the mode to 'Low Pass'. Draw automation where the Cutoff knob gradually closes from top to bottom toward the chorus.
Effect: A 'muffled' sensation is fully realized, as if the sound is gradually sinking underwater, focusing the listener's auditory attention on a single point. The impact of the chorus, bursting in full range immediately after, jumps up explosively.
③ Add a 'stylish radio voice-style' hook to the song's intro
For when you want to start with a deliberately cheap sound quality at the beginning of a track and create a gap where the high-quality original sound rings out all at once after the break.
Settings: Set the mode to 'Band Pass' and fix the Cutoff around 1kHz. Add just a little bit of resonance.
Effect: It instantly transforms into a somewhat nostalgic and emotional texture, as if flowing from a phonograph or an old radio. A stylish introduction that grabs the listener's ears is complete.
3. Practice in FL Studio: Precision 1Hz Cutoff Management by OS
Controlling filter cutoff and resonance is directly linked to the groove and tonality of the track down to the millimeter, so precise operation that feels natural to your hands is necessary.

Operation to move the 'Cutoff' knob and find the razor-thin boundary where you can just barely keep the synth's delicious harmonics with high precision:
Windows: Ctrl + Drag
Mac: Command + Drag
When you want to completely bypass the filter effect and calmly check how much of the original sound's energy has been stripped away by the processing:
Windows: Alt + Left-click to reset knob to initial value
Mac: Option + Left-click (*Utilizing the modulation system that is Kilohearts' strength, sending the kick's trigger signal from FL Studio's 'Peak Controller' to the kHs Filter's Cutoff, and momentarily cutting the bass's low end with a High Pass the instant the kick sounds is the Crontis Studio-style ultimate secret technique for separating the low end without lowering the volume)
Difference in effect heard in Before / After
1. A mix where all instruments are playing in full range, crushing each other's frequency bands
The sound pressure is there, but the low-mids are saturated, giving a cramped impression where you can't tell what the star is.
2. After applying kHs Filter
The view of the mix has become completely clear! By stripping away unnecessary low frequencies with a High Pass and making the Low Pass undulate according to the progression, the 'aesthetics of subtraction' perfectly dwell within the track. Because the sound has been organized, it has evolved into a professional modern sound where the vocals and kick in the center stand out sharply at the very front of the speakers.
