The Magic of Music Production: Enveloping Sound in 'Light'. The Ultimate Pure Plate Resonance
Introduction
Hello, this is Crontis. In this article, I'd like to introduce the 'Pure Plate Reverb,' which I always pull up when I want to add some 'allure' to vocals during the final stage of a mix.
There are many types of reverb, but plate reverb is created by physically vibrating a 'metal plate,' and it is characterized by a very beautiful, extended high-frequency range. As the name suggests, the UAD Pure Plate has a transparency that feels as if all impurities have been removed, and it has a persuasiveness that makes you think 'Ah, this is it' the moment you insert it.
1. What is Pure Plate Reverb?
This is a plugin that extracts the behavior of legendary plate reverb units and condenses only the most musical essence.
-
Simple Parameters:
Reverb Time: Adjusts the length of the resonance.
Pre Delay: Adds time between the sound and the onset of the reverb, preserving the contour of the original sound.
Bass / Treble EQ: Adjusts the tone of the reverb component to help it blend into the mix.
-
Main Feature:
A 'Can't-Go-Wrong' Tone: No matter how you set it, the sound never falls apart, and its appeal lies in its extremely smooth decay that doesn't feel like the digital-specific grit (metallic texture).
UADx Pure Plate Reverb Parameter Explanation

1. Input/Time Adjustment (Top Slider)
LOW CUT Hz: Cuts the low frequencies of the reverb component (OFF / 90 / 180Hz). This is an essential feature for suppressing muddiness in the low end and keeping the mix clean.
PRE DELAY ms: Sets the delay time from the original sound until the reverb begins to sound. By adding a little of this, you can expand the space while maintaining the contour of the original sound.
REVERB TIME: Adjusts the length of the reverberation with the '-' / '+' buttons. It determines the length of the dense, metallic, and beautiful sustain characteristic of plate reverb.
2. Tone Control (Middle Knobs)
BASS: Boosts/cuts the low-frequency texture of the reverberation.
TREBLE: Adjusts the brightness of the high-frequency reverberation. Effective when you want to emphasize the shimmering texture characteristic of a plate.
3. Output/Mix (Bottom Knobs)
BALANCE: Adjusts the left/right positioning (pan) of the reverb sound.
MIX: Adjusts the ratio between the dry signal (DRY) and the reverb signal (WET).
POWER: Toggles the plugin on/off.
WET SOLO: When turned on, outputs only the effect sound. Set this to 'ON' when using in a send/return configuration.
💡 Creative Usage Tips
Adding 'Gloss' to Vocals: Plate reverb is a perfect match for vocals. By setting LOW CUT to 180Hz and slightly increasing TREBLE, you can add a silky, premium feel without interfering with the vocal performance.
Snare Presence: Applying it to a snare drum with a shorter REVERB TIME adds a dense resonance after the initial snap, resulting in a modern rock or pop sound.
2. Plate Techniques to Elevate Your Tracks
① 'Silky Luster' for Vocals
For when you want glamour in the singing voice but don't want to blur the core by widening the space too much.
Settings: Set Reverb Time to around 2.0s and add a slight Pre Delay (about 30ms).
Effect: Adds a luxurious and elegant sustain, as if delicate particles of light are dancing around the singer.
② 'Depth' and 'Presence' for Snare Drums
For when you want the professional recording atmosphere for drums that sound too dry.
Result: Cut the Bass slightly and raise the Treble to emphasize the high-end resonance.
Effect: Every time the snare is hit, the space opens up brilliantly with a 'snap,' imbuing the entire beat with a premium feel.
③ Making Acoustic Guitars 'Three-Dimensional'
For when you want to create a vivid sense of realism, as if it were being played right in front of you.
Setting: Keep the Mix conservative at 15-20%, and adjust the mid-range with EQ.
Effect: The guitar's body resonance is beautifully extended, transforming a flat recording into a 'three-dimensional performance' with depth.
3. Practice in FL Studio: Precise 'Reverb Design' by OS
A professional technique is to control the 'decay' according to the song's tempo, rather than letting the reverb 'run wild'.
Checking Shortcuts (by OS)
Operations to fine-tune the Reverb Time to a 'musical length' that fades out cleanly at the start of the next bar:
Windows: Ctrl + Drag
Mac: Command + Drag
When checking for 'unpleasant frequencies' using only the resonance by setting the reverb to 100% (Wet only):
Windows: Alt + Left Click to reset the knob
Mac: Option + Left Click to reset the knob (*Inserting it into a mixer Send track and sharing the 'same plate resonance' across multiple instruments is the Crontis Studio secret to creating a sense of unity.)
The difference in effect heard in Before / After
1. A very tight, slightly 'lonely' dry vocal
It is accurate, but it doesn't blend into the space, creating a wall between it and the listener.
2. After applying Pure Plate Reverb
The singing voice has been released into a vast, yet transparent space. By beautifully extending the high frequencies, the 'sheen' of the voice is emphasized, and the quality of the entire track is raised by one, or even two levels.
Summary
Pure Plate Reverb is 'a tool not to bury sound in space, but to light up 'light' around the sound.' When you get lost in multi-functional reverbs, try returning to this 'pure resonance' once. Its simplicity should sharpen your intuition.
