The Magic of Music Production: The Illusion of Milliseconds. Hacking Sound Arrival Time to Paint a Vast Panorama
Introduction
Hello, I'm Crontis. The "kHs Haas" plugin I'm introducing today is the one I trust most in my mixes when I don't want to muddy the sound with reverb or chorus, but I absolutely need to widen the horizontal spread to the limit and open up a large space in the center.
This effect is the literal embodiment of the "Haas effect" (precedence effect) in acoustics. Humans perceive sound as coming from the "center" when the exact same sound reaches both ears, but if the arrival at one ear is delayed by just "1ms to 30ms" (milliseconds), even if the sound quality and volume are identical, it is perceived as coming from the direction where the sound arrived first, while simultaneously creating the illusion that the sound has expanded dramatically in the horizontal direction. The brilliance of this plugin is that it allows you to perfectly control this brain mechanism with a single knob.
1. What is kHs Haas?
It is an ultra-lightweight, specialized spatial effect that creates an overwhelming sense of stereo width by generating a tiny time difference (time delay) between the left and right channels, without changing the pure sound quality of the original audio at all.

Two controls stripped down to the absolute essentials:
Delay: Adjusts how much to offset the left and right channels between "0ms and 100ms". The "10ms to 30ms" range, where the Haas effect works most beautifully, is the main highlight.
Mode (Left / Right / Stereo): Switches which channel to delay, or uses "Stereo" mode to invert left and right to twist the space even more three-dimensionally.

Main Feature:
Widening through "subtraction" without muddying the sound at all: Unlike reverb or delay, it doesn't "add reverberation afterward," so the sound doesn't get pushed back or blurred. You can expand the sound's position to the side walls while keeping the crisp contour and attack of the original sound 100% intact.

1. Delay
Role: Adjusts how much of a "time difference (delay)" to create between the left and right channels.
Effect: By adding a delay of just a few milliseconds (ms) to several tens of milliseconds, the sound peels away from the center and spreads dynamically to the left and right walls. Due to the nature of the Haas effect, if the delay is too long, it will be heard as a simple "separate left and right delay echo" rather than "widening," so the trick is to adjust the knob to the perfect point where there is no wavering or discomfort.
2. Channel (LEFT / RIGHT)
Role: A switch to select which channel, left or right, to "delay".

Effect: * RIGHT (Selected): Delays the sound in the right channel. In this case, because the sound reaches the left ear first, the human brain perceives the sound as 'spreading widely from the left side'.
LEFT: Delays the sound in the left channel. Because the sound reaches the right ear first, it is heard as if 'the sound is spreading from the right side'.
💡 Creative Applications
Pseudo-doubling for acoustic and electric guitars: This is extremely effective when you have only been able to record one track of backing guitar that should ideally be played twice and panned left and right. By inserting this kHs Haas and setting the Delay to around 15–30ms, you can instantly create a thick wall of stereo guitars as if two guitars were playing simultaneously at the far left and right.
Vocal/FX processing to clear the center: Use this for sub-choruses you want to play behind the main vocals, or for FX (sound effects) scattered throughout the track. By using kHs Haas to spread the sound to the extreme left and right, the most important center space is left wide open, dramatically improving the clarity of the main vocals, kick, and snare.
2. Haas Hacking Technique: Welcoming the Mix Protagonist to the Center
① Instantly making a mono synth sound from 'right next to the speakers'
When you have layered synths so much—such as for the main chords in 'Future Bounce'—that all the sounds have gathered in the middle, crushing the essential kick and vocals located in the center.
Settings: Insert into the synth bus (or individual layers) and set Delay to '15ms–25ms'.
Effect: The core of the sound pops out from the center to the left and right walls, completing a vast panorama as if the speakers themselves have disappeared. At the same time, because the middle opens up cleanly, the low end of the kick will punch through with 120% clarity.
② Fixing the 'presence' of a lead guitar at the forefront of the arrangement
For lead instruments that get buried in the wall of backing sound, where turning up the fader just makes the volume explode without them cutting through cleanly as the face of the track.
Result: Delay is set to a short time around 10ms, and the balance between the dry sound (original) and the Haas sound is fine-tuned by ear.
Effect: The 'sound jumping forward' texture unique to the Haas effect is added, allowing you to elevate the protagonist to the best seat in the mix without dirtying the overall volume balance (meter) at all.
③ Giving a single vocal the thickness of a 'double (two-person setup)'
When you want to transform chorus or rap backing recorded on only one track into a rich, professional-grade thickness, as if it were recorded separately on the left and right (double tracking).
Settings: Insert into a Send track and layer it thinly behind the original sound with the Mix set to 100%.
Effect: A dramatic wall of harmony overflowing with stereo feel is instantly completed, as if a giant aura is wrapped around the singer.
3. Practice in FL Studio: Strict 1ms Phase Management by OS
While the Haas effect powerfully expands space, there is a trap: if the delay time is too short, 'comb filtering (phase issues)' occurs where specific frequency bands cancel each other out when the left and right sounds overlap, causing the sound to disappear when played in a mono environment (such as smartphone speakers).
Checking Shortcuts (by OS)
Operation to find the 'miracle just-point' where the sound never thins out even when heard in mono, by moving the 'Delay' knob in 1ms increments and toggling the 'Mono switch' in the FL Studio mixer:
Windows: Ctrl + Drag
Mac: Command + Drag
When resetting the knob to the complete mono state of '0.0ms' and calmly checking how much the spatial dimension was expanded by the Haas effect:
Windows: Alt + Left Click
Mac: Option + Left Click (*Before kHs Haas, place the 'kHs Pitch Shifter' learned in the 114th installment of this series, and applying the Haas effect with one side slightly detuned by about '+5 cents' is the winning pattern for creating the world's richest width while perfectly avoiding phase cancellation in a mono environment.)
The difference in effect heard in Before / After
1. A lonely synth pluck that sounds precise but is stuck like a single line in the center of the mixer
It is accurate, but not even 1% of the spatial width is used, giving the entire track a cramped and small-scale impression.
2. After applying kHs Haas
The spatial stopper has been completely removed! Even though the fresh texture and attack of the sound have not changed at all, the reverberation has expanded 3D-wise as if wrapping around to the back of the listener's ears. With overwhelming headroom created in the center, the power of the kick and bass has awakened, evolving into a professional modern sound that can be placed side-by-side with commercial tracks.
Summary
kHs Haas is a 'spatial magic processor for creating an overwhelming 3D panoramic space by daring to create a millisecond-level "arrival time gap" between left and right in the flat 2D world of digital, and poking at the illusions of the human brain.' This sensation of 'creating a slight gap in the left and right perspectives (time) to trick the brain into perceiving an overwhelming three-dimensional effect (depth) that does not actually exist' is based on the exact same logic as '3D parallax (stereoscopic effect due to the difference in movement speed between the background and foreground)' and 'optical axis design of stereoscopic 3D cameras' in video production.
