5 Charms of Otocinclus

Otocinclus are a type of small catfish known in the aquarium hobby as the ultimate algae-eating expert. They are widely loved by everyone from beginners to veterans for their adorable appearance and high practicality. There are many other charms, but I would like to list five of them.

This time, I will introduce the Otocinclus.

Excellent algae-eating ability (especially brown algae)

They love to eat the brown algae (diatoms) that grows in tanks, making them excellent "cleaning organisms" that keep glass surfaces and aquatic plants clean. Their mouths are shaped like suction cups, allowing them to lick off algae and biofilm from surfaces without damaging driftwood or aquatic plants.

Gentle temperament that does not harm other fish or plants

They have a very docile personality and rarely cause trouble when kept with other fish, shrimp, or shellfish. Also, since there is no need to worry about them eating aquatic plants, they are a valuable tropical fish that can be safely introduced into aquascaped tanks.

Comical and adorable behavior and appearance

You will never get tired of watching them stick to the glass and diligently eat algae, or seeing their suction-cup-like mouths and charming expressions. Their movements are also comical, and one of their charms is how they sometimes swim in a "standing" position against the tank glass.

Can be kept in small tanks

Even when fully grown, they only reach a body length of about 3-5 cm, so they can be introduced into small tanks of about 30 cm and do not take up much space. If you keep them in a small group suited to the tank size, they will reliably take care of the algae cleaning.

Hardy once accustomed to the tank water

Although their vitality may be low immediately after purchase (upon arrival), once they settle into the tank environment, they are very hardy and long-lived fish. Because they can live off the algae in the tank without needing special feeding, they reduce the hassle of long-term maintenance.
