Read this before applying to SIers for job hunting. An active engineer has mapped out the entire 'IT Industry Map'
Hello, I am Cosmos, an IT engineer and individual investor.
I usually write articles analyzing publicly traded companies from both the perspective of 'attractiveness as a place to work' and 'value as an investment target,' but this time I am changing things up a bit and starting a series themed around 'what it means to work in the IT industry (especially as an SIer).'
I will be publishing everything for free, so I hope it helps with your industry research.
🎯 Why I am writing this series
I have worked on projects alongside people from major SIers as a developer for the niche COBOL language. Through that experience, I realized that the way of working, salary, and career path differ completely depending on the 'industry structure' and 'type of company.'
However, when I was a job seeker, such 'real information' was not very accessible.
What is the actual work of an SIer?
What is the difference between a primary contractor and a secondary contractor?
What are the roles of a PM and PMO?
It seems highly specialized and difficult to study.
Does the way of working change depending on the development methodology?
The purpose of this series is to answer these questions as honestly as possible as someone with field experience.
📚 Themes covered in this series
· What is a project?: The fundamental concept of a 'project' in the IT industry. I will organize the flow of goal setting, planning, execution, and review.
· The overall picture of the IT industry and its players: The four layers that make up the industry—consultants, user companies (IT departments), SIers, and infrastructure/operations & maintenance—and their respective roles.
· Three classifications of SIers: User-affiliated, manufacturer-affiliated, and independent—the differences in their characteristics, salaries, working styles, and career paths. ·
Basics of development methodologies: Waterfall development and Agile development, their respective characteristics, and what they are suited for. ·
Practical guide to choosing a company: Perspectives for job seekers and young engineers to find a company that suits them, and questions to ask during interviews.
In each installment, I will organize publicly available information and thoroughly explain salaries, the reality of working styles, pros and cons, and who is or is not suited for the role, incorporating actual reviews and data.
💡 What you will gain from this series
· The overall picture of the IT industry (SIer) will be 'visualized' · You will understand the type of company that suits you · You will be able to reduce the gap after joining a company · You will be able to concretely map out your career plan
This series will be written primarily from the perspective of working professionals, so I believe it will be very useful for job changers or for industry analysis of IT companies for new graduates.
On the other hand, for investor readers, I also plan to introduce where each company belongs within the IT industry. I aim to provide content that can also be read from the perspective of how IT companies generate revenue through their activities and how they streamline sales and profits.
