[For Beginners] Discord Basics | Account Display Settings

Hello, this is Mitz from CommuCal.
At CommuCal, we are constantly promoting the planning and operation of over 20 companies/communities, and the use of Discord as a place for building communication within communities—a communication platform—is also expanding.

Depending on the community type, but based on our information gathering and intuition, about 20-25% of communities promoted by companies as businesses are Discord communities.

This time, I will provide an explanation of Discord accounts for beginners.
※I will explain using screenshots from the Windows PC version.

Discord Account

In a Discord account, you can set your "Username," "Display Name," "Avatar," "Pronouns," "Server Nickname," and "(Server-specific) Pronouns."

Various Settings Screens

Username

This must be unique across all of Discord.
※Previously, usernames were made unique by adding a #identifier (a 4-digit number), but the current specification no longer displays the identifier.

Display Name

This is the name displayed on messages you post within Discord and on member lists. Other members will basically recognize you by this display name. It is what is known as a nickname.

The area in the red frame is where the display name is reflected

Pronouns

These are gender pronouns (the pronouns you want people to use when referring to you). This is your self-identified gender. Set pronouns such as "he/him," "she/her," or "they/them" as needed.
※In this modern age where awareness of gender equality and LGBTQ+ is necessary, such pronouns are also needed on community platforms.

Server Nickname

This is a nickname that can be set for each server. In practice, it is used with almost the same meaning as a display name (regular nickname), but it is called a "Server Nickname" because it refers to the name displayed within that specific server by setting it consciously only for that server.
※If not set, the aforementioned "Display Name" will be used.

Server-specific Pronouns

These are the aforementioned pronouns, but like server nicknames, they can also be set for each server. Please set these as needed as well.
※If not set, the aforementioned "Pronouns" will be used.

How to Change Various Settings

There are several ways to display the settings screen.

Opening the Settings Screen

You can open the settings screen from your avatar (icon) or display name on your own posts.
You can also open the settings screen from your avatar or display name in the member list.

Settings Location

The settings location is as shown in the image below.
*Changing the username (the name that is unique across all of Discord) is omitted here. (The assumption is that the username is set when the account is created and is generally not changed thereafter.)

Basic display names and pronouns are set from "My Account" and "User Profile".

Setting Display Name | Pronouns

Server nicknames and pronouns that change for each server are set from "Profiles" and "Server Profiles".

Select the target server and set the server nickname | server-specific pronouns.

That concludes Discord Basics Part 1: Account Display Settings.
The first step is to be aware of how you are displayed in each server you join.
