ðŒïžI thought Van Gogh was a dark person. But what I saw was lightâšâïž
Good evening, this is Mikiâ€ïž
Today, I'm writing about the
Great Van Gogh Exhibition I went to the other dayãâš
It's being held at the Ueno Royal Museumð
It's been a while since I've been to Ueno!
Arrived in Ueno via the Ginza Lineã

My reservation was for 4:00 PM.
I arrived a little early, but
there's already a lineãð«¢ (even though it's a weekdayã)
The gift shop is also crowdedãð«¢
The Van Gogh Exhibition is amazingð«¢
Well, finally time to go insideã(^o^)ïŒ
This time, there were only two paintings
that allowed photographyð
âïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïž
Before I went, I had a somewhat dark image
of Van Goghð¶âð«ïž
A life of suffering.
A lonely painter.
Intense colors.
That's because those were the words that came to mind first.
However, as I actually started looking at his works,
that image gradually began to change.
An exhibition room lined with early pencil drawings and realistic works.
While looking at the finely detailed cityscapes and portraits,
"I didn't know he painted things like this too"
I stopped in my tracks.
(Work title: View of The Hague / Carpenter's Workshop and Laundry)
What left a particularly strong impression wasa portrait of an old woman.
(Work title: Head of a Woman)
Even though I was looking at her face,
I felt as if the time she had lived
was being conveyed to me.
It wasn't just that it was painted skillfully.
Something deep in her eyesdrew me in.

Flower paintings from the Paris period

The flower paintings were also wonderful.
I was surprised when I read the explanation for the rose paintingð³
It seems the colors we see now are different from the colors at the time they were painted.
Originally, most of it was finished in redð¥ and greenð¢,
but due to aging, the red has faded,
so it must have been much more vivid back then.
The moment I read that explanation
âAh, I wish I could have seen the colors from that time.â
I thought.
The colors now are beautiful, too.
But I want to see the colors Van Gogh saw, just once.
Thatâs how I felt.

And the one that captivated me the most was
âCafe Terrace at Nightâ
The deep blue of the night sky.
The yellow light of the cafe terraceð¡
And the starsâïž
I found myself staring at it unintentionally.
What caught my attention in particular was the shape of the starsâïž
They are stars, yet they aren't just dots.
The light spreads out, as if they are alive.
I wonder why they are shaped like that.
I spent a while thinking about it while looking at the paintingðŒïž
Since there was a long line, it was only for a few dozen seconds, though...
Bright even though it is nightð
Warm even though it should be dark.
It was a mysterious paintingðŒïž
It was not an era like today where the whole city is bright.
Back when gas lamps were the only source of light.
I wonder how the night looked to himð
I wonder what he saw.
I walked through the exhibition thinking about such things.
âïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïž
Come to think of it, at the Monet exhibition I went to a while ago,
the light left an impression on með
Light reflecting on the water's surface.
Sunlight filtering through the trees.
Scenery that changes with the time of day.
And now, this Van Gogh.
Stars in the night skyâïž
The lights of the cafe terrace.
The setting sunâïž
The way they paint is completely different.
But for some reason, I am drawn to both.
I feel like I was thinking the same thing on my way back from the Monet exhibition.
What am I looking at?ð
Is it flowers?ðž
Is it color?ð©µ
Is it light?ð¡
I thought about it for a while, and then it suddenly hit me.
Perhaps I am moved not by the light itself, but by the
light within the shadows.
Light and shadow.
Nightð and morningâïž
Yin and yang.
A world that cannot exist with only one or the other.
âïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïžâïž
When I was young, I thought it would be better if there were no shadows.
I thought it would be better to have no worries, anxieties, or failures.
That was especially true around the time I got divorced.
The anxiety of being alone was so great that I just felt I had to do my best.
But now that I have more life experience,
the morningâïž is beautiful because there is the nightð.
The light shines because there is shadowâš
Looking at Van Gogh's paintings, I felt as if I had been reminded of such a simple truth all over again.
When I left the exhibition, the greenery of Ueno Park was beautifulð³
I can hear the sound of a bell from Kaneiji Temple.
The scenery hasn't changed.
Was it me who changed?
Thinking about that, I walked through the greenery for a whileð³
How was the big Van Gogh exhibition this time?
It was a shame there were so few photosð
