5.3 Global Environment and Population Decline: Significance from the Perspective of Sustainability

Population decline is often perceived as "economic decline" or a "loss of social vitality." However, from a global perspective, population growth itself is the fundamental cause of many environmental problems.

Here, I would like to change the perspective and consider: "Isn't population decline actually an opportunity to realize a sustainable society?"

1. Environmental problems caused by population growth

Since the 20th century, humanity has experienced explosive population growth, and with it, many environmental problems have become increasingly serious.

• Acceleration of deforestation: Due to farmland and urban development, the world's forest area has decreased significantly.

• Impact on climate change: Global warming is progressing due to the massive consumption of fossil fuels.

• Depletion of water resources: With population growth, securing drinking water and agricultural water has become difficult.

• Increase in waste: The disposal of plastic waste and industrial waste is not keeping up.

Many of these problems are due to "human activity exceeding the Earth's carrying capacity." In other words, population decline has the potential to reduce these environmental burdens and accelerate the transition to a sustainable society.

2. Positive environmental impacts of population decline

As the population declines, there is a possibility of environmental improvement such as the following:

• Urban overcrowding is alleviated, and the natural environment recovers

• Greenhouse gas emissions decrease due to reduced energy consumption

• Pressure on food production decreases, making sustainable agriculture possible

• Forest recovery and ecosystem protection progress, maintaining biodiversity

In particular, if a social system that does not rely on mass consumption of resources is established, population decline can lead to improving the quality of human life while reducing environmental impact.

3. Toward building a sustainable society

To connect population decline to a sustainable future, the following initiatives are important:

✅ Promotion of a circular economy: Transition to an economic model based on recycling and reuse
✅ Utilization of renewable energy: Realization of a society that does not depend on fossil fuels
✅ Design of compact cities: Curbing wasteful urban sprawl and carrying out efficient infrastructure development
✅ Transition to a decentralized society: Enriching life in regional areas and preventing over-concentration in cities

By combining these measures, we can leverage population decline not as a negative, but as a 'lifestyle for the next era' that considers the balance with the global environment.

4. Accepting population decline and moving toward a better future

Population decline is a global trend, not limited to Japan, and is particularly prominent in developed countries.

• By 2050, population decline will be in full swing in many countries around the world

• A transition from a resource-consuming society to a sustainable circular society is required

• A society that does not exceed the Earth's limits will become the new 'affluence'

In the coming era, the question will not be 'How can we increase the population?', but rather 'How can we live prosperously with a smaller population?'

Population decline is by no means something to be pessimistic about; rather, isn't it a 'new opportunity' to realize a sustainable future?
