Why does no one talk about this? Bugseed must have a deep knowledge of JAZZ [Sonic Déjà Vu 1]
Elvin Jones is a legendary drummer known for his wild, instinctive beats that feel like they are played by sensation rather than theory.
He has a cool track called 'Four & Six'.
While digging through Apple Music to see how others interpret this song, I had a moving encounter.
The fact that the leader chose a drummer's track, and then sampled just two beats of a phrase, makes me want to say, 'Wait, that part!?' but I can't help but grin at this maniacal selection.
The piano is by Hank Jones, and the bass is by Art Davis.
Next, another track:
the classic Miles Davis song, 'Milestones'.
This one is also boldly sampled. The slightly off-kilter, floating unison of Miles, Adderley, and Coltrane in the B-part.
When you put this over an 8-beat rhythm,
it floats away for a moment,
making you think, 'Oh, it's gone,'
but it returns perfectly at the end of the measure.
This back-and-forth is irresistibly satisfying.
Jazz standards have been listened to for decades,
and one might think everything has already been said about them,
but it's because of encounters like this that I can't stop digging.
