The 'Last Line of Defense' of the Human Mind: Why We Stubbornly Close Ourselves Off When Attacked by 'Correct' Logic | Mind Bug Screening Individual Commentary ⑤
※ This article is the 5th in a series of comprehensive and individual commentaries that unravel the '5 defense reactions and true wishes' that every human possesses, using traditional folktales. You can view the overall roadmap and general overview article [here (link to general overview article)].
[Introduction] People who are beaten by 'correct' logic and take 'absurd actions' at the edge of despair
'I know 100% that what the other person is saying is correct, but I just can't accept it honestly, and instead, I end up rebelling.' 'I am in an extreme situation where all my resources are about to run dry and I cannot afford any more failures, yet for some reason, I end up taking rash actions that seem like a 'waste' to those around me.'
When we are pushed to the edge of life, or when we are cornered by the 'North Wind of Correct Logic' from others, we sometimes lose our rational calculation circuits and take actions that seem utterly absurd at first glance.
In the folktale 'The North Wind and the Sun,' the more the North Wind blew a fierce wind (correct logic/coercion) to forcibly strip the traveler of his coat, the more the traveler stubbornly shrank his body and gripped his clothes tightly in a defensive reaction, closing his heart in rejection. And in 'Kasa Jizo,' on the way home in despair after failing to sell even a single umbrella (resources on the verge of total loss) needed to see out the year, the old man gave away all his remaining assets—his umbrellas (and his own hand towel)—to the Jizo statues shivering in the blizzard, free of charge. This was an absurd investment (gifting) that ignored the logic of capitalism.
Behind these two extreme behaviors lies the ultimate defense reaction of the human system: the 'defense of self-existence.' Why do humans trigger bugs that transcend logic when cornered? We will dissect the mechanism and the 'true wish' hidden deep within.
🧩 Connecting two stories through systems theory: 'The mechanism of dignity and defense'
We will unravel the system errors and the structure of the great reversal embedded in these two stories from the perspectives of incentives and defense.
1. 'The North Wind and the Sun': The 'rebellion error' triggered by a logic hack
The approach the North Wind took was a 100% legitimate goal (logic): 'Take off your coat.' However, the moment it was thrown at the other party as a violent environmental variable called a 'forceful wind,' the traveler's system did not focus on the 'rightness of the goal,' but rather maximized the gear of the defensive instinct to 'protect oneself from an external enemy'. Humans have a bug where, if their will (autonomy) is denied and they are forced to be controlled, they choose 'rejection' no matter how correct the other person is. The approach of beating someone with 'correct' logic is a systemic, inevitable error that strengthens the other person's 'defensive line' rather than their logic.
2. 'Kasa Jizo': The 'bug exploit of gifting' at the edge of total loss
The old man was facing a crisis of 'total loss' (game over) with zero resources to see out the year. Normally, the brain in this extreme state tries to hoard its remaining resources to the limit, thinking, 'I must not lose even one more millimeter' (maximization of loss aversion). However, the old man performed a 'bug exploit' by giving away all those few umbrellas to Jizo statues (others) from whom he could expect no return, flipping his incentive structure from a 'poor victim' to a 'giving savior.' As a result, this triggered a great reversal (miracle) that attracted a huge return (treasure) in the middle of the night, utilizing a system bug.
🧠 The true nature of defense reactions: Resistance to the fear of having 'one's dignity' reduced to nothing
Why does our brain trigger bugs that make us defy correct logic and take actions that ignore risks at the edge of total loss?
At work here is a super-powerful defense reaction for mental survival that fears 'the death of one's own autonomy and dignity' more than physical death.
Surrendering unconditionally to someone else's 'correct' logic, or simply being crushed by the unreasonableness of the environment, means to the brain 'the complete loss of the existence value and autonomy of oneself (the system).' To the brain, this is a fear as unacceptable as physical death.
Therefore, the brain tries to 'stubbornly close its heart and resist (defend), and protect its last fortress (dignity/autonomy) to the end,' no matter how disadvantageous the situation becomes or how correct the other person's argument is.
Also, just as the old man who was on the verge of total despair gave away his umbrellas, by taking the absurd action of 'gifting (investing) in the world of his own volition' rather than just being taken from and ending up with nothing, he refuses to let go of the control of his own dignity until the very end.
🌸 The 'true wish' behind the defense reaction
We tend to blame ourselves for being unable to listen honestly to others' advice, or for running toward extreme, near-self-destructive behavior when cornered, calling ourselves 'narrow-minded' or 'emotional and childish.'
However, deep within that extreme defensive reaction of 'stubborn rejection' or 'gifts that transcend logic' lies the most noble 'true wish' as a human being.
'Do not render my existence null. I want to protect my dignity.' 'Do not make me follow others' orders; let me hold the rudder of my life with my own will (agency).'
The traveler who clutched his coat and the old man who put a hat on the Jizo statue both simply wanted to 'defend their own dignity and agency to the death.' The essence of this bug is that the poignant wish not to lose the axis of one's own existence is transformed by strong external pressure into absurd means such as 'stubborn rejection' or 'extreme expressions of will.'
🧭 A Prescription for Breaking the Spell of the North Wind and Mastering the Bug Technique of Gifting
Your wish to 'protect your dignity' is the most precious energy related to the root of life. However, you need to stop trying to protect that dignity by 'stubbornly closing your heart' or 'self-destructive exhaustion' right now.
Here are two steps to escape this last line of defense and fulfill your wishes in a healthy way.
① Mute the 'Logical Truths of the North Wind' and regain your agency
When you are bombarded by the North Wind of logical truths from others, such as 'You are wrong' or 'You should do this,' please cover your ears (mute them) before verifying the correctness of the content. What your heart is rejecting is not the content, but the 'style of coercion that is the North Wind.' Once you distance yourself and secure a space of agency where you can decide what to do by your own will rather than being forced by anyone, let's re-examine the logic.
② Change the rules through 'Gifting (Proactive Investment)' before you are robbed
If you are currently in a 'crisis of total loss' where your time, money, and mental resources are about to run dry, refuse the position of a victim who just 'waits to be robbed and worn out.' Proactively offer (gift) the few cards you have (kindness, words, small skills) to others in need (the Jizo) of your own volition, without seeking anything in return. By taking back control of the game, the distortion of incentives is resolved, and a 'rearrangement (great reversal)' from an unexpected place begins.
Do not change your value; change your place. When you stop surrendering to logical truths and redesign the game with your dignity at the center, the rules of the world will flip from a 'North Wind' that corners you to a 'Sun' that warmly unravels you.
🛠️ 1-Minute Screening Sheet
Open your notebook or smartphone memo right now and let's check the bugs in your head.
Q1. What is the 'North Wind of logical truths' from those around you that you are currently strongly rebelling against (rejecting) and cannot honestly accept?
Q2. In a situation where you are currently on the verge of despair because all your resources are drying up (crisis of total loss), what is a 'small gift (investment)' you can dare to offer to those around you to regain your own agency, instead of just waiting to be robbed?
Q3. If you were to fulfill your true wish to 'protect your dignity and agency' not through stubborn rejection, but by 'drawing a boundary that says, I decide by my own will,' who would you want to convey what words to?
