How to be happy: 'Don't assume the pudding will be there tomorrow.'
The flower in the top image is a 'Scabiosa'.
Its flower language is 'I have lost everything'.
That is quite a heavy flower language.
But what I lost recently was,
not the world or my life, but a pudding.
The other day, I had a strange dream.
Someone said this to me with a straight face:
'Don't assume the pudding will be there tomorrow.'
What kind of advice is that?
And specifically about pudding, too.
Even after I woke up, I didn't understand the meaning.
But strangely, that phrase just wouldn't leave my head.
When I think about it, it's true.
There is no guarantee that the pudding in the fridge will be there tomorrow.
A family member might eat it.
The expiration date might pass.
I might eat it in the middle of the night.
The future is not promised to pudding.
And that doesn't just apply to pudding.
Health, too.
Time with family, too.
Even casual, everyday life.
Things we think of as 'see you tomorrow',
are actually not guaranteed at all.
We are good at getting used to things 'being there'.
It becomes normal for them to exist.
That's why we only realize their importance once they are gone.
If I can, I want to realize it before I lose them.
I want to properly savor what I have today, today.
Someone in my dream taught me that with just a pudding.
Thank you.
But if possible, next time, please use a slightly more stylish example.
Like a macaron.
Because pudding is a bit too childish and embarrassing.
The flower language of Scabiosa is 'I have lost everything'.
Someday, everything, including myself, will be gone.
I believe that realizing the importance of things before they are gone
will bring you closer to happiness.
Books that influenced me in writing this article
'Live as if today is the last day of your life' / Take-toshi Ozawa
As a palliative care doctor who has been by many people's sides at the end of their lives, the author gently teaches us 'how to live with limited time'.
There is no such thing as something being 'taken for granted'.
It reminds us of something so simple, yet easy to forget.
You can learn much more deeply from this than from the pudding story.
Please check it out.
