Chapter 1
The Problem: Language Exists in Time

Most linguistic theories describe language as a completed object.

Once an utterance has been produced, its grammatical organization may be analysed as a linguistic structure. Phrase structures, dependency relations, and syntactic hierarchies all belong to this level of description.

The present theory does not question the validity of such analyses.

Rather, it addresses a different question.

Language is never experienced as a completed structure by the participants themselves.

For both the speaker and the listener, communication unfolds progressively.

Every utterance develops one sign at a time.

Every newly produced or perceived sign immediately modifies the cognitive context established by the preceding signs.

Consequently, the object of the present study is not the completed linguistic structure described by grammatical analysis.

Its object is the dynamic operation of the linguistic system during communication.

The central question therefore becomes not

"What is the structure of a sentence?"

but rather

"How is the linguistic system operated in real time while communication unfolds?"

This distinction is fundamental.

A completed structure is the result of linguistic activity.

The present theory is concerned with the cognitive activity that makes such structures possible.

Its purpose is therefore not to replace structural linguistics or generative grammar, but to investigate the temporal cognitive processes that precede and produce the structures subsequently described by those disciplines.

Language is understood here not primarily as a completed structure, but as the real-time operation of a remembered linguistic system.


Chapter 2
Memory and the Dynamic Operation of the Linguistic System

The present theory concerns spoken language in two complementary modes.

The first is spoken communication, in which linguistic signs are exchanged through speech.

The second is reading, through which the same linguistic system is accessed by means of its written representation.

Although these two modes employ different perceptual channels, both ultimately operate upon the same remembered linguistic system.

The present theory assumes that this linguistic system has already been acquired by both participants in communication.

The acquisition of vocabulary and the development of linguistic competence therefore lie outside the scope of the present study.

Its object is the real-time operation of an already remembered linguistic system.

Memory is not regarded simply as a repository in which linguistic signs are stored.

Rather, it constitutes the cognitive environment within which linguistic signs are continuously retrieved, organized, manipulated, and integrated into an evolving communicative context.

Every act of language production begins with the retrieval of remembered linguistic signs.

The speaker continuously recalls and selects linguistic signs according to semantic intention, linguistic constraints, and the communicative context constructed up to that moment.

Language comprehension follows a complementary process.

In spoken communication, the listener initially receives only continuous acoustic waves.

These acoustic signals are not linguistic signs in themselves.

Using the remembered phonological system of the language, the listener continuously organizes the incoming acoustic stream into phonological categories.

Through this cognitive operation, linguistic signifiers are reconstructed from physical sound.

Only after phonological signifiers have been reconstructed can their corresponding signifieds be retrieved from memory and integrated into the developing communicative context.

Reading follows a related but distinct cognitive path.

The reader initially perceives visual patterns produced by written symbols.

Once these symbols are recognized as elements of the writing system, they provide access to the remembered linguistic system, allowing corresponding linguistic signs to be activated and integrated into the communicative context.

Despite the differences between these perceptual channels, both spoken communication and reading ultimately depend upon the same remembered linguistic system.

Language comprehension is therefore not a passive decoding process.

It is an active cognitive operation performed upon the remembered linguistic system.

The same principle applies to language production.

The speaker continuously operates upon the same remembered linguistic system, retrieving and selecting linguistic signs while anticipating their consequences for the evolving communicative context.

The difference between speaker and listener is therefore not one of cognitive nature.

The speaker selects the next sign to produce.

The listener reconstructs and interprets the next sign from the incoming perceptual stream.

Both operate upon the same linguistic system preserved in memory.

Communication succeeds because these parallel cognitive operations remain sufficiently coordinated throughout the temporal development of the communicative act.

Only after this dynamic operation has been completed may the resulting utterance be described as a linguistic structure by grammatical analysis.

In this sense, structure is not the object of the present theory; it is the observable result of the real-time operation of the linguistic system.


Chapter 3
Real-Time Articulation

The central concept of the present theory is Real-Time Articulation.

Articulation is traditionally understood as the segmentation of language into meaningful units. In linguistic analysis, this segmentation is often described as a static organization revealed through the examination of completed utterances.

The present theory proposes a broader interpretation.

Articulation is not only the result of linguistic analysis.

It is also a continuous cognitive activity performed during communication itself.

Every newly perceived or produced sign immediately modifies the current communicative context.

Articulation therefore operates continuously throughout the temporal development of an utterance.

This operation is shared by both participants in communication.

The speaker articulates remembered signs while selecting the next linguistic expression.

The listener articulates the incoming stream of signs while continuously predicting, identifying, and interpreting the next linguistic unit.

Although their immediate objectives differ, both participants perform the same fundamental cognitive operation.

They continuously organize remembered signs within the evolving communicative context.

Real-Time Articulation is therefore neither purely linguistic nor purely motor.

It constitutes the cognitive mechanism through which remembered linguistic signs become communicable.

This interpretation also provides a natural connection between the two traditional meanings of the word articulation.

In structural linguistics, articulation refers to the segmentation of linguistic signs.

In phonetics, articulation refers to the coordinated movements through which speech sounds are physically produced.

The present theory does not regard these meanings as unrelated.

Both are manifestations of the same underlying cognitive activity.

One organizes remembered signs into meaningful linguistic units.

The other organizes remembered motor patterns into intelligible speech.

Both are continuously regulated through memory and ongoing perceptual feedback.

Consequently, articulation is understood here as the real-time cognitive operation that links memory, linguistic signs, and communicative action.

Static linguistic structures become observable only after this operation has been completed.


Chapter 4
Implications for Foreign Language Education

The present theory originated from problems encountered in foreign language education.

Many learners possess sufficient grammatical knowledge and vocabulary, yet remain unable to follow ordinary spoken communication.

This difficulty cannot always be explained by a lack of linguistic knowledge.

Rather, it often reflects insufficient ability to operate the remembered linguistic system in real time.

Knowing a linguistic system and operating it efficiently are two different cognitive abilities.

Traditional language teaching mainly develops explicit knowledge about language.

The present theory suggests that language education should also cultivate the cognitive ability to perform Real-Time Articulation.

This objective requires teaching methods that represent language as a temporal cognitive activity rather than as a completed grammatical object.

Digital learning environments provide unique opportunities for this purpose.

An utterance may first appear in its ordinary written form.

With a simple interaction, it may then be reorganized into successive syntagmatic units.

Lexical heads may be highlighted while function words remain visible.

Alternative segmentations may also be displayed whenever they facilitate comprehension.

Such visualizations are not intended to replace grammatical analysis.

Instead, they aim to train learners to operate the remembered linguistic system while communication is still unfolding.

The ultimate objective is neither faster grammatical analysis nor improved memorization alone.

It is the gradual acquisition of the cognitive ability to articulate language in real time during listening, reading, speaking, and writing.


Conclusion

The present theory proposes a change of perspective rather than a rejection of existing linguistic theories.

Structural linguistics and generative grammar describe the structures that become observable once an utterance has been completed.

The present theory investigates the cognitive activity that precedes those descriptions.

Its object is not linguistic structure itself.

Its object is the real-time operation of the linguistic system preserved in memory.

Within this framework, memory occupies a central position.

It is not merely a repository of linguistic knowledge.

It is the cognitive environment within which linguistic signs are retrieved, organized, manipulated, and continuously reorganized throughout communication.

Real-Time Articulation constitutes the fundamental operation that makes this dynamic organization possible.

Through this operation, remembered signs become meaningful utterances for the speaker and meaningful interpretations for the listener.

Communication succeeds because both participants continuously operate upon the same remembered linguistic system while constructing a shared communicative context.

From this perspective, grammatical structure is not the starting point of linguistic activity.

It is one of its observable outcomes.

The present theory therefore does not seek to replace structural description.

Instead, it seeks to explain the cognitive processes through which remembered linguistic systems are dynamically operated, making linguistic structures possible.

In this sense, the present theory may be understood as a return to Saussure's conception of the linguistic system, reinterpreted from the perspective of memory, cognition, and temporal communication.


Scope of the Present Theory

The present theory is intentionally restricted to spoken language and its written representation.

Its assumptions are based upon communication mediated through the auditory and visual channels associated with spoken language.

This restriction does not imply that the proposed cognitive principles are exclusive to spoken language.

Natural sign languages constitute another fundamental modality of human language and are likely to share many of the same cognitive principles discussed in the present theory, including memory retrieval, contextual organization, and Real-Time Articulation.

Nevertheless, sign languages employ perceptual and motor channels that differ substantially from those involved in spoken communication.

These differences are expected to influence the organization of cognitive processing in important ways.

For this reason, the present theory does not attempt to extend its conclusions directly to sign languages.

Such an extension should be regarded as an independent line of theoretical and empirical investigation.
