I bought 100 shares of J Trust. Two days after switching from cross-trading to spot buying, the earnings report, share buyback, and spin-off announcement all arrived at once.
I bought 100 shares of J Trust (8508) as a spot purchase. My goal is the special shareholder benefit for the September 2nd record date, which is a digital gift worth up to 10,000 yen.
Originally, I intended to just extract the benefit using a credit cross-trade. If I set up a cross-trade on August 31st, the final day with rights, I could get the benefit while bearing almost no risk of stock price fluctuations. As someone who has written many articles on benefit cross-trading, that is the standard approach.
I decided against that this time and bought them as a spot purchase on August 5th. Then, two days later on August 7th, at 4:00 PM, three disclosures were released simultaneously: the interim earnings report, a resolution for a share buyback, and the start of a study on a spin-off.
As a result, I am also capturing the price increase on the shares I held as a spot purchase. However, this was not something I aimed for or predicted. I will write about the decision-making process and the numbers honestly, as always.
Disclosure of this position
I bought them at market price on August 5th in my SBI Securities specific account.
| Item | Amount |
|----|--------------------|
| Ticker | J Trust (8508) TSE Standard |
| Execution Date | August 5, 2026 |
| Quantity | 100 shares |
| Execution Price | 870 yen |
| Total Acquisition Cost | 87,000 yen |
| Fees | 0 yen |
The stock price movement on August 5th saw an opening price of 863 yen, a high of 892 yen, a low of 854 yen, and a closing price of 869 yen. My price of 870 yen is almost exactly in the middle of the range. I didn't successfully pick the bottom.
Since the TSE closing price on August 7th was 885 yen, the valuation at that point was 88,500 yen, with an unrealized gain of 1,500 yen (+1.72%). Because the earnings were announced at 4:00 PM after the market closed, the content of the earnings report is not factored into this 885 yen price. In the after-hours PTS trading on the same day, it was bought up to 895 yen, and at that level, the unrealized gain would be 2,500 yen (+2.87%). The market's full reaction will come from the start of the next week.
Why did I choose spot buying instead of cross-trading?
Benefit cross-trading is a method where you buy the same stock as a spot purchase and simultaneously sell it short on margin, creating a situation where gains and losses offset each other regardless of whether the stock price goes up or down, allowing you to only capture the benefit rights. Costs are limited to stock lending fees, reverse conversion fees, and commissions.
In the case of J Trust, with a stock price in the 870 yen range for 100 shares, the capital required is in the 80,000 yen range, and the cost is on the order of a few hundred yen even with a same-day institutional margin cross-trade. Compared to a benefit worth up to 10,000 yen, the calculation is overwhelmingly profitable.
Even so, I chose a spot purchase because this stock had factors accumulating other than the benefit. They are continuing share buybacks, the PBR is significantly below 1x, and the interim earnings announcement was scheduled for August 7th. If I had used a cross-trade, I wouldn't have captured any of this upside. Conversely, I wouldn't have suffered any downside either.
In other words, choosing a spot purchase is a decision to accept the risk of stock price fluctuations yourself in addition to the benefit. This time, it happened to swing upward, but if the disclosures on August 7th had been bad news, this article would have been a report on an unrealized loss. I want to emphasize this point.
What was released on August 7th?
At exactly 4:00 PM on the same day, multiple disclosures, including those related to earnings, were lined up. I will look at the contents in order.
Interim Earnings: For the interim period of the fiscal year ending December 2026, operating revenue was 62.4 billion yen (up 3.1% year-on-year), operating profit was 7.3 billion yen (up 59.1%), and interim profit attributable to owners of the parent was 6.1 billion yen (up 340.9%). The interim profit is approximately 4.4 times higher. This is said to be driven by improvements in the Japanese financial business and the Korean financial business. The full-year forecast remains unchanged, and the annual dividend is also planned to be maintained at 17 yen.
Share Buyback: At the board meeting on the same day, matters related to the acquisition of treasury stock were resolved. Based on the resolution in May 2025, the company has already acquired 990,500 shares (total acquisition cost of approximately 500 million yen) by the end of March 2026, and it continues to uphold shareholder returns and the improvement of capital efficiency as ongoing management issues.
Start of Spin-off Study: Personally, I feel this is the most significant disclosure this time. The content is to consider spinning off the overseas business by having a successor company inherit the shares of subsidiaries belonging to the Korean financial business, Southeast Asian financial business, and investment business.
The reason the company cites is that businesses with different revenue structures, capital efficiencies, risk profiles, and investor evaluation criteria are mixed within the same corporate group, which may be causing a so-called conglomerate discount where the characteristics and growth potential of each business are not fully reflected in the stock price. It is organized such that the domestic financial and real estate businesses have relatively high capital efficiency and a stable revenue base, while the overseas business is susceptible to external environments such as interest rate trends, funding environments, credit costs, and financial regulations.
Regarding the shares of the successor company, while the company states that it is considering a distribution in kind to its shareholders as the basic line at this point, it also states that it will carefully consider other options, including a bulk transfer to a third party. The wording is that matters requiring a resolution of the general meeting of shareholders are expected to be submitted to the annual general meeting of shareholders scheduled for March 2027, although there is a possibility of changes in future studies, including the schedule.
I repeat, this is at the 'start of study' stage. It is clearly stated that nothing has been decided at this point regarding the scope, method, or timing of execution.
Details of the special benefit
I will organize the conditions for the special shareholder benefit, which is the main purpose this time.
| Item | Content |
|------|-------------------|
| Record Date | September 2, 2026 |
| Final Day with Rights | August 31, 2026 (Mon) |
| Target | Shareholders holding 100 shares or more as of the record date |
| Content | Digital gift worth up to 10,000 yen |
| Holding Period Condition | None (uniform regardless of years) |
| Notification Mailing | Around mid-October 2026, by mail |
| Receipt Deadline | January 18, 2027 (Mon) 23:59 |
This benefit commemorates the fact that the credit guarantee balance of the consolidated subsidiary Nihon Hoshou exceeded 300 billion yen and the assets under custody of J Trust Global Securities exceeded 500 billion yen as of the end of March 2026. The company has clearly stated that this special shareholder benefit is being implemented only this time to commemorate the achievement of these KPIs.
The exchange options are quite broad, ranging from staples like Rakuten Points, PayPay Money Lite, Amazon Gift Cards, d Points, QUO Card Pay, Toshocard NEXT, TOHO Cinemas, Skylark, and Yoshinoya, to crypto assets like Bitcoin. It is also possible to split the receipt among multiple exchange destinations within the limit of up to 10,000 yen.
Yield simulation
I will calculate the yield against the total acquisition cost of 87,000 yen. This assumes the benefit is the full 10,000 yen value.
| Item | Amount | Yield against acquisition price |
|------------|---------|-----------|
| Special Benefit (Max) | 10,000 yen value | 11.49% |
| Annual Dividend (Pre-tax) | 1,700 yen | 1.95% |
| Annual Dividend (Post-tax) | Approx. 1,355 yen | 1.56% |
| Benefit + Dividend (Post-tax) | Approx. 11,355 yen | 13.05% |
The benefit alone exceeds 11%. This is a figure only because it is a one-time commemorative benefit, and it is not a yield that will continue from next year onwards.
However, the numbers will change if the assumption of the full amount collapses. I will provide the sensitivity.| Real value of benefit | Benefit yield | Benefit + Post-tax dividend ||-------|------|--------|| 10,000 yen | 11.49% | 13.05% || 9,500 yen | 10.92% | 12.48% || 9,000 yen | 10.34% | 11.90% || 8,000 yen | 9.20% | 10.75% |
I will write about why there is a possibility that it will not be the full amount in the next chapter on risks.
Risks and points to note
Writing only good things does not constitute verification.
It is 'up to' 10,000 yen, not 10,000 yen. The company's guide clearly states that for some exchange destinations, fees will be incurred at the time of exchange, and for crypto assets, the face value received will fluctuate depending on the rate at the time of exchange. In other words, depending on how you choose the exchange destination, the value remaining in your hands could be less than 10,000 yen. If you choose an exchange destination that does not charge fees, it should be close to the full amount, but it is not accurate to simply count it as 'receiving 10,000 yen.' I initially thought on the premise that it was worth 10,000 yen, but I am being careful about this.
Bearing the risk of stock price fluctuations. Unlike cross-trading, holding a spot position means an unrealized loss if the stock price falls. I am going for a 10,000 yen benefit with an 87,000 yen position, so if the stock price falls by 11.5%, the benefit will be wiped out. 11.5% of 870 yen is about 100 yen, which is a range that is quite possible given the recent price movements of this stock.
Drop on the ex-rights date. September 1st, immediately after taking the benefit rights, is a phase where the stock price is likely to fall as the benefit is factored in. Since it is a stock with a benefit yield exceeding 11%, the drop could be correspondingly large. If I continue to hold it as a spot position, I will have to absorb this drop. The spin-off is only at the study stage. The scope, method, and timing of execution are undecided, and the expected submission to the general meeting of shareholders is March 2027. It has not been decided whether it will be a distribution in kind or a transfer to a third party. It is impossible to calculate what future shareholder value will be based solely on this disclosure.Need to look at the content of the earnings. An interim profit 4.4 times higher is a good-looking number, but it is also the flip side of the low level in the same period of the previous year. The full-year forecast is unchanged, and there has been no upward revision. Also, it has been pointed out that the company has a low capital adequacy ratio and interest-bearing debt is on an increasing trend. Since it is a group that includes the banking business, a simple comparison cannot be made, but one should not judge by looking only at good numbers.Taxation of benefits. Shareholder benefits are generally considered miscellaneous income for tax purposes. Digital gifts are no exception. Since the necessity of filing depends on the amount and the balance with other income, if you are concerned, please check the information from the National Tax Agency or consult a tax accountant. I am not a tax expert, so I will not write anything definitive here.It will expire if the receipt deadline passes. The guide will arrive by mail around mid-October, and the receipt deadline is January 18, 2027, at 23:59. It is clearly stated that the guide will not be reissued. If you leave it alone thinking you have received the benefit, it will disappear.
Future verification policy
I will record the following with this position.
• Stock price movement until the final day with rights on August 31st, and the unrealized profit/loss up to that point
• How much it fell on the ex-rights date of September 1st (the drop width of a stock with a benefit yield of over 11%)
• The guide that arrives in mid-October, the exchange destination actually chosen, and the actual amount remaining in hand
• If a fee was charged, how much it decreased from the full 10,000 yen
• The decision on whether to continue holding the spot position after acquiring the rights or to let it go after the ex-rights date, and the result
• Progress of the spin-off study (disclosures toward the annual general meeting of shareholders in March 2027)
At the time of writing this article, August 31st, the final day with rights, is still ahead. Whether or not you do the same thing as me is another matter, but there is still time to make a decision.
Next time, I plan to write about the progress in early September after the ex-rights date. The actual amount of the benefit will be determined after October.
