Cats, Philosophy, and Gratitude for the Future

Yesterday, I said something terrible to my parents.

I wanted to force my opinion through at all costs and became emotional. Looking back, I realize my words were as sharp as a blade and hurt them.

On a pleasant, sunny afternoon, as I sat by the window, my cat suddenly jumped onto my lap. His name is Michelangelo, or Mike for short. With his fluffy fur and whimsical personality, he is truly the model of a cat. Perhaps sensing my mood, Mike stayed on my lap longer than usual.

Cats are philosophers. Watching Mike, I sometimes think so. He says nothing, yet just by being there, he teaches me so much. For example, the importance of the present moment. Mike doesn't worry about the future. He simply spends his time relaxing in a warm spot, feeling his owner's love, and living in the now. How luxurious and wonderful that is.

When thinking about what we can do for the future, perhaps it is best to start with the small things around us. When I get emotional, like I did yesterday, I should try to pause for a moment. That alone might change the world little by little. Feeling gratitude toward one's parents and expressing it in words is one such thing. Having the courage to apologize might be a step toward making the future better.

A philosopher once said—or maybe they didn't—that 'gratitude is an expression of love for others, and is an ethical act in itself.' Having a sense of gratitude and putting it into action brightens our future. Mike the cat also teaches me gratitude through his very existence. When he is on my lap, I feel his warmth and weight, and I am reminded of how happy that makes me.

What we can do for the future is not necessarily something grand. It is about maintaining a sense of gratitude in our daily lives. Turning the regret of saying something terrible to my parents into a feeling of gratitude. That is what will make our future better, little by little, but surely.

Today, Mike is closing his eyes on my lap again. Listening to his quiet breathing, I think about what I can do for the future. To live each day with care, never forgetting to be grateful. Perhaps that is the philosophy I learned from a cat. Like Mike, while feeling the importance of living in the present, I will take one step at a time toward the future.
