[Weekly Short-Short Note] Kofun Syndrome
Immediately after a heartbreak, or losing something precious, I felt a hollow 'hole' open up in the center of my chest—not just in my heart, but physically as well. I felt a sense of emptiness, as if a cold wind were blowing right through me.
However, a few days later, damp soil began to rise from the edges of that hole. I rushed to the hospital in a panic, where the doctor told me nonchalantly,
'It's a classic case of "Kofun Syndrome." You are trying to fill and seal off a great sense of loss with earth.'
There is no prescription. I simply have to wait for the cavity in my chest to fill up. As the days go by, the hole takes on the elaborate shape of a keyhole-shaped burial mound. The smell of the soil is strangely nostalgic, and its moderate weight calms my trembling heart.
Before I knew it, the surface was covered in blooming milk vetch, and now, small haniwa figures are lined up as if basking in the sun. I no longer feel that chilling wind.
Last night, I dreamed of a bird that had wandered into that flower field and started happily building a nest. Perhaps my loss has, without me realizing it, become a lively home for someone else.

*When there is a hollow hole in your heart that won't fill no matter how hard you try, it might just be preparing to turn into your own personal 'sanctuary'.
Along with the spring milk vetch, here is a small story of rebirth.
*Mr./Ms. Tahara, I look forward to working with you.
