Love movies but have no friends? Why I, a 30-year, 1000-film veteran, am hosting a small discussion group

"I love movies, but I don't have any friends to talk about them with."

I suspect there are quite a few people who feel that way.

I was the same way for a long time. It has been over 30 years since I started going to the cinema. I have seen over 1,000 films. My dedicated movie account has over 2,000 followers. Even so, I didn't have a single person I could casually talk to about movies.

Why movie lovers have no friends

I once put out a call asking, "Would anyone like to go see a movie with me?" There were zero applicants.

I felt a bit down. But I understand it now. Being a movie lover and having movie friends are two different things.

Movies are a hobby that is complete on its own. You don't talk during the screening. You go your separate ways when it's over. Even if you write your thoughts on social media, they just drift away in the moment. Before I knew it, 30 years had passed.

The phrase "I'd go if it were closer"

The other day, I wrote about this very thing in an article. To my surprise, it gathered more empathetic comments than I expected.

The one that left the biggest impression was the phrase, "I'd go if it were closer." Later, when I announced a discussion group, I even got a comment asking, "Can I still join?"

I wasn't the only one who loved movies but had no friends to talk about them with.

So, I decided to create a small space

It's not a film criticism club. It's not a place to compete over knowledge. It's okay if you haven't seen a movie lately. Having just one favorite movie is enough.

A place where you can simply say, "I saw this movie recently." A hangout for adults, meeting once a month with 3 to 5 people.
