[Anime Review] Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Nameless Heroes and Samurai Fight Japanese-Style Walking Dead
≪No spoilers included≫
Information on the anime 'Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress'
Dark Fantasy / 12 Episodes / Japan
Broadcast Period: 2016
The setting of 'Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress' is a fictional world that resembles Japan's Sengoku period.
Creatures called Kabane, which have turned into blood-sucking zombies due to some kind of virus, are swarming everywhere, and humans live restricted lives in castle towns surrounded by scattered walls.
Armored steam locomotives run from town to town, which people use to travel, go to recapture towns taken by the Kabane, or evacuate to other towns.
The story begins when the town where the protagonist boy lives is attacked by Kabane, and his daily life is destroyed.
The surviving villagers board an arriving armored steam locomotive and head for the Shogunate's largest city.
If I talk too much about the setting of this story, it will be a spoiler, so I'll leave it at that.
As for the story, it's a common zombie-swarming type, and while there aren't any overly complex settings, interesting elements are scattered throughout, so I was hooked until the end and watched it all at once.
First of all, the world-building was a great mixture.
There are samurai who use swordsmanship, as well as those who use guns or ride motorcycles.
Their technology is primarily steam-powered, so there are steampunk elements, and there are zombie-like guys who suck blood and bite to increase their numbers.
The characters are also very unique and quite good.
The protagonist is a maverick who ends up looking like Tetsuo from AKIRA, and there's an incredibly strong girl, a strong-willed young lady, a swordsman who is too straightforward, and anyway, it's a story about lovable people you want to survive, racing through on an armored steam locomotive while fighting on the verge of life and death.
By the way, this animation is produced by WIT STUDIO, which became a hot topic for its god-tier animation in 'Attack on Titan', and the director is also Tetsuro Araki.
So, the action scenes are insanely awesome.
You can see a bit of it in the opening video, so please check it out.
