What choice recently made you feel like your heart had become "lighter"? | Happy Writing Marathon #37
When I saw this prompt, an event immediately came to mind.
However, it is deeply connected to a problem currently in progress, and I found it difficult to put into words.
Recently, my physical condition and feelings have finally started to settle down a little bit,
"Oh, maybe it's okay to write about it now."
A moment arrived when I could think that.
Looking back, the reason my heart felt lighter is very simple and
it lay in letting go of one "attachment" I had been holding onto for many years.
.
Today, I would like to write about what kind of changes that choice brought with it.
When I let go of my attachment, my choices began to move
The topic that has been discussed most in our home recently is "relocation due to Tokyo's road planning."
We have had a relationship with the people in charge for nearly 10 years now, but there have been no forced movements at all, and our regular meetings have been amicable.
We currently live near the place where my mother's family home used to be, an area filled with memories where I lived from birth until my second year of junior high school.
From the time I got married and started looking for a home, living in this area again was always an option.
A plot of land happened to come up near the elementary school I attended, and we signed the contract after receiving an explanation about the road plan.
Although we were told, "I don't think it will ever actually happen," it was about 10 years ago that things actually started to move.
Even though I was prepared to some extent, I kept clinging to the idea that the relocation site had to be "near the current area."
Thinking about it now, this attachment might have been what made choosing so difficult.
"Close is good enough" wasn't necessarily the right answer
Recently, I was contacted saying that a few candidate sites that seemed to fit our criteria had come up, so I went to visit them with the person in charge.
All of them were in the neighborhood, land where part of the site was affected by the road plan and the remaining residential portion was put up for sale.
Although the conditions were close to ideal, in the end, we made the decision to "pass."
I have summarized the details in a series of articles, but at this point, I still couldn't let go of the thought,
"I really do want to be near my current home."
Starting the search for a new location and aligning our values
That said, with specific candidates appearing, the search for a relocation site suddenly became realistic.
In the midst of that, my husband made this suggestion:
"Let's actually go see the properties we're curious about, and whether it's a yes or a no, let's align our values early on."
From here, the way we searched began to change.
The day a place I thought was absolutely out of the question became our top candidate
There was a property that came up near a route my husband often walks during cherry blossom season.
There were many stairs and slopes, so when I heard about it, I immediately said no, thinking,
"It might be fine now, but it looks like it would be tough in the future."
However, when I actually went there, my impression changed completely.
The environment was impeccable, and considering our future life, it was actually closer to an ideal location.
The place I had said was "absolutely out of the question" had, before I knew it, become our top candidate.
Even if you let go of an attachment, you don't have to let go of your foundation
It looks like we will likely pass on that land due to building condition issues, but
this experience changed my values significantly.
It doesn't have to be in the area where I live now.
If it's a distance I can travel if I want to, that might be enough.
The scenery and people in the town where I was born and raised are already changing.
Even so, the feeling that "there is a place I can return to" becomes a support for my heart.
Because I have a foundation, I can accept new choices.
I truly feel that way.
The reason my heart felt lighter
By letting go of the thought I had held for many years that "it has to be here,"
my options expanded all at once.
Strangely enough, my hesitation also became lighter at the same time.
This year, the selection of our relocation site and the home building process will finally begin in earnest.
I plan to record that process in the "Searching for Our Final Home" series.
