The most dangerous thought is "I'll be fine if I just push through." Lessons learned from traveling with a cold
Have you ever had a long-awaited trip coincide with feeling under the weather?
Before my recent training trip, I also
didn't recover well after practice and felt a bit off, thinking, "Could this be a cold?"
However,
・Non-refundable tickets
・The destination should be warmer than Tokyo,
and I should feel better once I get there and rest.
・I might be able to manage if I push myself a little.
After setting off with those thoughts,
partly due to unexpected factors like local temperatures and flight delays,
unfortunately, my condition worsened.
With that reflection in mind,
for those who are hesitating, thinking, "I'm feeling a bit off, but I think I can go,"
I've compiled some things to be careful about when traveling while not in perfect health.
1. Rest as much as possible before departure. See a doctor if you can.
It's easy to get busy with travel preparations, but
when you're feeling unwell, resting properly is the top priority.
If possible, it's reassuring to see your regular doctor before you leave.
Just having medicine on hand can provide peace of mind.
2. Be honest with your travel companions.
It's easy to try to hide it by pushing through, but
sharing how you're feeling from the start makes things easier in the end.
It becomes easier to take more breaks or change plans along the way.
3. Feeling unwell + flying is a recipe for getting worse.
Unlike spending time at home or work,
the act of traveling itself is a major burden on the body.
One thing to be especially careful about isthe effects of air pressure.
・Aviation otitis media
If you have a cold, it can put a heavy strain on your ears.
If you have even the slightest concern, I recommend seeing an ENT doctor beforehand.
4. Masks and measures against dryness are essential.
The cabin air is well-controlled, but it is extremely dry.
・Wear a mask
・Stay hydrated frequently
It's best to treat travel time not as "transit" but asrest time.
5. Don't be greedy at your destination.
Packing too much into your trip can be counterproductive when you're already feeling down.
Consult with your companions or tour guide to
make flexible adjustments, such as taking a day off or reducing your plans.
Looking back at my social media,
I found quite a few records of myself "going on a trip despite feeling unwell."
Even when healthy, travel can be tiring.
When you're already feeling off, the impact is greater than you'd imagine.
Especially abroad,
finding a hospital or getting medicine can be a major ordeal.
I realized this time that the strain of thinking "I'll manage somehow"
can turn a trip into a painful memory.
Because you can't always travel when you're in perfect health,
if you feel even a little uneasy, take care of yourself early.
I hope this experience serves as a tip to help protect someone else's fun trip.
