Everyone's Milk

Mammals grow up drinking milk.
I saw a whale nursing for the first time.
It was completely different from the mammal nursing I had imagined.

Cow's milk.
Breast milk.
Goat's milk.
Kitten's milk that a kitten drinks.
Puppy's milk that a puppy drinks.

I had assumed that all milk was a thin, watery liquid.

It might be a bit denser than water, but

just like how adults gulp down cow's milk,

I thought that was how babies drank it too.

For no particular reason,

I have this strong desire to see whales.

Since I've been watching nothing but whale videos,
on Instagram,
swimming whales,
schooling whales,
birthing whales,
leaping whales,
spouting whales,
and so on, have started to be picked up and shown to me automatically.

Among them,a nursing whale calfappeared.

To my surprise, whales

don't nurse by latching onto a nipple,

but from a slit-like opening on the mother's body,

a liquid that looked so viscous it could be undiluted Milky,

a liquid with visible, incredible thickness,

was being drunk by the baby whale.

It was just like

the kind of footage you see maybe once a year,

of someone slurping up a thick udon noodle without cutting it.

It was like that.

Nursing on land. Nursing underwater.

Nursing while being held.
Nursing while standing.
Nursing while lying down.
Nursing in the water.
Nursing while swimming.

Everyone's milk.
