Adventure Chapter Episode 3: Taking on the First Technical Theme
Quest 002: Resource and Energy Security
In Quest 001, we took the first step of making handwriting a daily habit.
This time, we are finally taking on our first technical theme.
The theme is,
**"Resource and Energy Security."**
Why did I start with this theme?
Around that time, the news was reporting daily on topics such as:
- The situation in the Middle East
- The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz
- The restart of nuclear power plants
These were the kinds of topics being broadcast.
I work in quality control at a cosmetics manufacturer.
I thought, "This will surely be important for the Professional Engineer Second-Stage Examination in the Chemical Division as well."
That was the reason I chose this theme first.
When I actually looked into it...
Although I had some preliminary knowledge,
a Professional Engineer essay requires:
1. Background
2. Current status
3. Initiatives within one's own industry
(4) Efforts as an engineer
(5) Future challenges
I decided to organize and write it in this flow.
To do that, I first need to input information correctly.
So, the first thing I picked up was
the "White Paper on the Environment" published by the Ministry of the Environment.
In a Professional Engineer thesis, it is important to think based on social issues and the latest trends.
I started by confirming what kind of issues the government recognizes and what direction it is indicating.
As I researched,
・Diversification of power generation methods
・Resource circulation
・Rare metal recovery
・Next-generation fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia
and so on,
I found that various initiatives are being promoted throughout society.
After finishing writing
After handwriting the 600-character thesis, I transcribed it on my computer and asked Chappy to proofread it.
I will create the final version of the thesis by reflecting that content.
If I were to organize the content of "Resource and Energy Security" that I summarized this time into a single illustration, it would look like this.
The biggest surprise
However, there was something else that surprised me even more.
“Resource and energy issues were connected to my own work.”
That is what I realized.
Since the beginning of this year,
I have been entrusted with more technical tasks than before,
such as creating quality specifications,
coordinating with raw material manufacturers,
and performing trace analysis using gas chromatography.
And what I realized was,
these are not just quality control tasks,
but the very role of an engineer supporting sustainable manufacturing.that is what it is.
When adopting alternative raw materials,
how should each inspection item be set?
How can the quality of the final product be maintained?
How can a stable supply be achieved amidst rapidly changing conditions?
How can we perform inspections with labor and energy savings?
These are also part of the resource and energy problem.
That was the moment I realized it.
It was the moment when the world I had been seeing in the news and the quality control work I face every day connected into a single line.
One more major realization
Actually, when I finished writing about this theme,
there was something that made me happier than the technical content itself.
That was,
"I can keep going with this study method."
being able to think that.
Since getting married, my free time has decreased.
Living a life where I spend hours with reference books open, like I did in my student days, has become difficult.
But,
writing by hand for just 25 minutes,
and then summarizing it on the computer afterward.
With this method,
I felt like I could keep it up while balancing work and family life.
Furthermore,
this study method is not just for the Professional Engineer exam,
but also for things like creating specifications and coordinating with other departments,
it will definitely be useful in my current job as well.
I had that realization too.
"I am putting in effort in the right direction."
I feel like that was the first moment I was able to think that.
Today's Lesson
Resource and energy issues are
not just challenges for energy companies.
Quality control,
research and development,
procurement,
manufacturing,
it is a theme that connects to all engineers.
And for me,
the social issues I saw in the news,
and my daily work have connected,
becoming my memorable first theme.
